What is the HCF Preparing for Hospital tool?

Know what to expect and how much you’ll pay before you go to hospital

Preparing for Hospital is HCF’s new online information resource. It is designed to give people a better understanding of some of the most common hospital procedures and includes a host of valuable information, from details of the procedure through to the potential out-of-pocket costs.

It contains a cost calculator which outlines the typical costs of 35 different procedures and shows how much is paid by HCF, how much by Medicare and what the out-of-pocket is likely to be for the policyholder. It also breaks down the main costs for the procedure including the specialist fees for surgeon, pathology and anaesthetist.

Why did HCF decide to create it?

After surveying a wide selection of its members, HCF saw there was general confusion about going to hospital and what it entails. HCF decided to counter this uncertainty by empowering members with information via the Preparing for Hospital tool, allowing them to make more informed decisions about their health care.

How can consumers benefit?

Apart from detailing the cost of various procedures, the Preparing for Hospital tool contains a wealth of other useful information. It uses videos, animations and interviews with HCF members to explain in easy-to-understand terms how procedures are carried out, how you can prepare for them, what happens during admission to hospital and what care you will require afterwards.

List of procedures (and costs)

The Preparing for Hospital hub can be found on the HCF website here. If you are planning to have a hospital procedure in the near future, you should pay a visit and read all about what you can expect.
