Handshake is a decentralised, permissionless, blockchain-based software that aims to address the issue of centralisation in domain names. Presently, ownership of web names is governed by a singular entity known as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). They control most of the common Internet suffixes such as .com and .net. A key benefit of Handshake – other than thwarting issues with centralisation – is improved World Wide Web security. According to the Handshake website, when compared with the current certificate authenticity (CA) system, the network has the ability to better differentiate legitimate websites from those that are malicious. The platform was launched in February 2020 by software developers and experienced crypto technologists, Joseph Poon and Christopher Jeffrey. It is based on Proof-of-Work protocols, like Bitcoin. HNS is the native token of the Handshake protocol and is vital to its operation. The coin is used for purchasing, transferring and refreshing domain names on the network. Implementation of a native token also helps prevent spam and server attacks.
