12 hair trends for 2021: The good, the bad and the mullet
Mullets are back on trend for 2021, so I guess hell froze over or something.
2020 was a year of hair experimentation because we quite literally had nothing better to do. It also means we also have a bunch of wickedly cool hair trends that we haven't seen before or haven't been in style for quite some time.
So take a scroll and discover what could be your new fabulous ~lewk~ this year. If you need me, I'll be scrolling through Instagram story filters to see if I can pull off blue hair.
1. 60s Fringe
If you've been tossing up whether to get bangs, then this is the year to do it. Don't worry, we're not talking those super blunt thick bangs that your mum made you get when you were in primary school.
Wispy front fringes that flutter a little lower than your brows and are super soft on the edges will be the absolute vibe. Let's just all promise right now that we're not going to cut them ourselves, okay?
2. Shaggy
Personally, I'm a big fan of this trend as it has a massive "I woke up like this" tone to it.
This cool-girl shaggy style is ramping up this season with lots of layers and flowy bangs for more of a lived-in look. It's a fabulous versatile style because you can soften it with waves or mess it up for a more punk style.
3. Low maintenance tones
More natural tones are on the horizon. The super-cool-toned balayage is a lot of maintenance and with how up and down being able to get to the salon has been, caramel and copper tones are easier to manage and maintain.
Fewer trips to the salon and less bleach = happy hair.
4. Money pieces
Y'all can thank TikTok for this one. The "e-girl" trend rose to fame on the video app and has since become one of the biggest hairstyles.
Celebs like Dua Lipa and Beyoncé have rocked this trend and they're 100 times cooler than me, so we are giving this style a big thumbs up.
5. Colour pops
2021 is the year to be bold, so expect to see pops of colours peppered throughout hair this season, especially with some of the younger celebs. We're talking bright reds, bold blues and stark pinks.
6. Curls curls curls
Easily one of my favourite trends for this year will be the tight ringlet curls.
Whether they're natural or you're about to spend a lot of time with a curling wand – this is it! You can especially expect to see this trend mixed with the curtain-bangs style for that 70s Bond-girl look.
7. Mermaid waves
This trend peaked in 2020 but don't expect it to be going anywhere. The beachy mermaid hair waves and those Instagram waver wands are sticking around for a bit longer and I am not complaining!

8. Mullets
I'm audibly cackling as I type this because who would've thought.
Big ol' shout out to Miley Cyrus for this one. She really leads the front for the modern mullet, and I'm completely obsessed with it. Shorter layers at the front with longer layers at the back will achieve this look. Billy-Ray must be so proud.
You can also go the extra mile, and ask your stylist to cut them in with a razor for that super edgy look.
9. Blunt bobs
While long glossy hair has always been admired, 2021 will see a focus on a shorter style.
Blunt bobs are super chic and super easy to maintain once you get the hang of the style with a straightener.
10. 90s layered blowouts
Another fave of mine is the 90s layered blowouts. These are just so stylish and give me major Rachel Green vibes.
11. Scalp care
Not necessarily a style but a big hair trend this year will be scalp care. A lot of brands launched scalp scrubs and masks in 2020, but this product is going to have a major boom this year, and we wouldn't be surprised if a number of brands released more.
12. Mini braids
A 2000s trend making its way back are those cute little plaits throughout a hairstyle. Whether your hair is out and flowing or in an up-do, this trend is a fun little way to level up your hair game.
