What is the GTX 1070 Ti?

The GTX 1070 Ti is an upgraded version of Nvidia's GTX 1070 graphics card. Released more than a year after the GTX 10 series first launched, it serves as a bridge between the GTX 1070 and the GTX 1080 in terms of both price and performance.

Since the GTX 1070 is already more than capable of handling modern games at 1080p and the GTX 1080 is better-suited to 4K and high-refresh-rate gaming, this places the GTX 1070 Ti squarely in 1440p territory. At this resolution, it delivers smooth 60fps more consistently than the GTX 1070 without charging GTX 1080 prices for the privilege.

Like its predecessor, the GTX 1070 Ti packs 8GB of GDDR5 RAM operating on a 256-bit memory bus at speeds of 8Gbps. Where it diverges is in clock speed: the base GPU runs at 1607MHz compared to the GTX 1070's 1506MHz. However, both cards offer the same boost clock speed of 1683MHz.

This extra grunt doesn't come free. While the GTX 1070 only pulls down 150W of power, the GTX 1070 Ti chews through 180W. The gap gets even larger when comparing branded variants of the GTX 1070 Ti that feature overclocked GPUs and more powerful cooling solutions.

On the physical front, meanwhile, the GTX 1070 and the GTX 1070 Ti are effectively identical. Both utilise the standard PCIe 3.0 interface and require at least a single 8-pin power connector. Size is still a big factor, too, with the GTX 1070 Ti spanning the width of two slots on the motherboard.

What features does the GTX 1070 Ti support?

Nvidia's big selling point with the GTX 10 series is the Pascal GPU architecture at the heart of each card. This technology brings with it a raft of features at both the software and hardware levels. Prime among these are:

  • Nvidia Ansel
  • SLI
  • G-Sync
  • DirectX 12
  • HDCP 2.2
  • OpenGL 4.5
  • Display Port 1.4
  • HMDI 2.0b
  • DL-DVI
  • Simultaneous multi-projection
  • Driver-level triple buffering

How powerful is the GTX 1070 Ti?

As one of the top cards in the GTX 10 series, the GTX 1070 Ti packs plenty of power in the gaming department. It typically has no trouble pushing the latest games to their maximum graphics settings at 1080p while maintaining a smooth 60fps, a feat it keeps up even when you increase the resolution to 1440p. While the regular GTX 1070 can often hit these same performance benchmarks too, the GTX 1070 Ti does so with greater consistency and stability. In practice, this usually amounts to a 10% to 20% increase in framerate over the GTX 1070.

Virtual reality is another of the GTX 1070 Ti's strong suits. It easily exceeds the requirements of both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift headsets, ensuring that it can handle the vast majority of VR games without issue.

If your interest lies in 4K gaming, the GTX 1070 Ti fares marginally better than the GTX 1070. Performance still lies in the 30fps to 60fps range depending on the particular game and how high you crank the graphics settings, but you'll be able to wring out a few extra fps thanks to the GTX 1070 Ti's higher clock speed.

GTX 1070 Ti availability and price

The GTX 1070 Ti was one of the latest additions to Nvidia's GTX 10 line, launching on 2 November 2017 – more than a year after the base GTX 1070 hit the scene. In its original Founders Edition form, the GTX 1070 Ti retails for $759, but custom variants from brands like Gigabyte and Asus tend to sell for somewhere in the $700 to $800 price range.
