GeForce GTX 1050 Ti: Price, performance, features compared

With 4GB of RAM and an attractive price tag, the GTX 1050 Ti sets a new standard for budget PC gaming.

GeForce GTX 1050 Ti at a glance

How powerful is the GTX 1050 Ti? The GTX 1050 Ti offers a fluid gaming experience at 1080p and Medium to High settings in most current games.
When did the GTX 1050 Ti come out? Nvidia launched the GTX 1050 Ti on 25 October 2016.
How much does the GTX 1050 Ti cost? The GTX 1050 Ti retails for around $250-$300.

What is the GTX 1050 Ti?

The GTX 1050 Ti is an enhanced version of Nvidia's GTX 1050 graphics card. Like its sibling, the GTX 1050 Ti is an entry-level card aimed at the budget-conscious gamer who doesn't need to crank every game to its highest settings or play at resolutions higher than 1080p.

Both the GTX 1050 Ti and the standard GTX 1050 share much of the same internal hardware and features. The two key differences lie with memory and GPU clock speed. Where the GTX 1050 only sports 2GB of GDDR5 RAM, the GTX 1050 Ti upgrades this to 4GB. The trade-off there is that the GTX 1050 Ti features a slower GPU, with its base clock speed sitting at 1290MHz and its boost clock topping out at 1392MHz.

In practice, these differences give the GTX 1050 Ti a noticeable performance boost of anywhere between 10% and 20% higher framerates over the GTX 1050. On Medium to High graphics settings, it typically delivers around 60fps at 1080p in most modern games. Dial up the settings to Very High or Ultra and the GTX 1050 Ti will still maintain a solid 30fps in the vast majority of current titles.

This level of performance aligns roughly with the capabilities of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, making the GTX 1050 Ti a solid choice for anyone looking for a PC-based alternative to current-generation consoles. The only area where the GTX 1050 Ti plays second fiddle to its console brethren is in virtual reality. Despite Nvidia's Pascal GPU architecture touting enhanced VR as a key benefit, the GTX 1050 Ti only just meets the minimum requirements for the Oculus Rift, while the HTC Vive requires at least a GTX 1060 for a stable experience.

While the guts of the GTX 1050 Ti are slightly different to the GTX 1050, the outside is identical. Most GTX 1050 Ti variants are dual-width cards and as such take up two slots on your motherboard. If your PC is already running low on space or you're building a compact rig, there are also single-slot variants for sale from select manufacturers.

Like the GTX 1050, the GTX 1050 Ti doesn't require an external power connector to function. Instead, it draws all the power it needs from the PCIe 3.0 slot on your motherboard. You will need a power supply with a rating of at least 300W to ensure there's enough juice to go around, though.

What features does the GTX 1050 Ti support?

As with all graphics cards in the GTX 10 series, the GTX 1050 Ti is built upon Nvidia's Pascal architecture. This provides for a wide variety of gaming-focused features, including:

  • Nvidia Ansel
  • SLI
  • G-Sync
  • DirectX 12
  • HDCP 2.2
  • OpenGL 4.5
  • Display Port 1.4
  • HMDI 2.0b
  • DL-DVI
  • Simultaneous multi-projection
  • Driver-level triple buffering

How powerful is the GTX 1050 Ti?

Thanks to its greater stock of RAM, the GTX 1050 Ti offers a marked improvement in performance over the regular GTX 1050. The extent of this improvement differs from game to game, but is typically somewhere in the range of 10% to 20% higher framerates.

As meaningful as this performance boost can be, it's important to keep in mind the limitations of the GTX 1050 Ti. Gaming at resolutions higher than 1080p is pretty much a no-go unless you turn the settings down to the bare minimum – and even then you'll be lucky to hit 30fps in most games. VR is more viable, although you would still have to settle for low graphics settings and the possibility of some games not working at all.

If you're okay with those caveats, the GTX 1050 Ti is an excellent budget graphics card for gaming at 1080p. It can deliver a smooth 60fps at Medium to High settings in most modern 3D games, or a stable 30fps if you'd rather bump those settings up to Very High or Ultra. There'll always be a game here and there that simply refuses to play nice, but in general the GTX 1050 Ti offers an experience on par with the PS4 and Xbox One.

GTX 1050 Ti availability and price

The GTX 1050 Ti launched alongside the standard GTX 1050 on 25 October 2016. Manufacturers like Gigabyte, Asus and MSI all sell their own custom variants of the card with slightly different clock speeds, cooling solutions and prices ranging from around $250 to $300.
