Going to the snow? Compare deals for Thredbo and Perisher 2018

Compare the early bird discounts at Thredbo and Perisher Blue.

By the numbers, Australia's Snowy Mountains is the country's most popular skiing and snowboarding destination. Perisher Blue and Thredbo are the biggest names in the Snowies, and this year they're both offering big discounts if you book at least seven days in advance.

The Perisher early bird discounts apply to all lift tickets, with extra discounts being available if you're purchasing a 5 in 7 day lift ticket. The Thredbo early bird discounts are for 1-4 day tickets, 5 in 7 day tickets, 6 in 8 day tickets and 7 in 9 day tickets. Discounts also apply to any bundles you include, such as equipment rental and lessons.

Similar conditions apply to buy early deals at both Thredbo and Perisher:

  • You must purchase online
  • You must purchase at least 7 days in advance

Both offers are slightly different though, so compare them side by side to find the one which offers you better value for money, or use a sneaky trick to combine the two.

Perisher Blue deals

Buy early and get up to 30% off all lift tickets. This maximum discount is only available for 5 in 7 day tickets 3-9 September. All other dates offer a maximum of 23% off with the 5 in 7 day pass.

For most dates the early bird discounts look like this:

Adult (age 14-65): $515 $396

Child (age 5-14): $282 $217

Senior (age 65+): $386 $297

Note: These prices are as of the initial time of writing, and are only intended to be used as examples of how much you save this way. Lift ticket prices change throughout the season and your tickets might cost either more or less than the prices above.

Perisher also offers lift and hire bundles. Again, the greatest discounts on these come from the 5 in 7 day pass where you stand to save up to 20%. Discounts start from 10% off on 1-day rentals.

Lessons need to be added onto either the lift pass or your lift and hire bundle. These range from 10-21% discounts depending on the number of days you require.

Thredbo deals

Thredbo is also offering generous discounts for those who buy early, online and at least seven days in advance, with up to 17% off its 5 in 7, 6 in 8 and 7 in 9 day ticket packages. These tickets let you access the mountain for any 5, 6, or 7 days within a 7, 8 or 9 day period respectively.

Unlike Perisher, your buy early discount here also apples to the cost of packages lessons and gear rental. As of the time of writing you can get:

  • Lift pass only: Up to 17% off
  • Lift pass plus rental: Up to 16% off
  • Lift pass and lesson: Up to 11% off
  • Lift, lesson and rental pack: Up to 12% off
  • Beginner lift and lesson pack: Up to 11% off
  • Beginner lift, lesson and rental pack: Up to 12% off
  • 1 to 21 day equipment rental: Up to 15% off rental packages and clothing rentals (excludes lift pass)

Note that these Thredbo buy early discounts cannot be combined with other promotional offers.

Which is better value for money?

If you're looking to save money on a lift pass and gear, the larger savings look to be toward Thredbo with up to 20%. If you're after gear and lessons on top of your lift pass, Thredbo bundles it up nicer.

Ultimately, if all you're after is a lift ticket, the savings lean more towards Perisher.

The ultimate savings trick

For the biggest savings overall, relative to the normal prices, you can go down for 7 days and visit both Thredbo and Perisher, and pick up buy early discounts for both.

You can get the full lift pass, lessons and rental deal at up to 30% off with Perisher, with a 5 in of 7 day pass, for up to 30%. You can then ski the first 5 days consecutively at Thredbo, taking some lessons as you go. For the next two days, you can then get the early deal on a 2-day Thredbo ticket at $178 ($2 less than Perisher), and take your rental gear over there as well.

By doing this, you're getting a a week on the snow, with up to 30% off your lift passes and equipment rental for the first 7 days. For the last two days, you can then ride on cheap lift tickets.

Ski hire can be a significant expense, so it can be well worth looking for ways to get it for less. Even if you don't want to take lessons, the Perish early bird discounts can help, as long as you get a 5 of 7 day ticket.

    What is the 1 and 2 day pricing on weekends if you do not purchase in advance for both Thredbo & Perisher?
