Melbourne public transport

Types of transport: You can get around Melbourne by train, tram or bus with Public Transport Victoria. Within the city and inner suburbs, trams are the most prevalent transport and can take you to popular sites like Federation Square and St Kilda Beach.

Paying for transport: An electronic Myki card can be bought for $6 and topped up at train stops or local retailers. Trips are free within the CBD free tram zone or $4.10 per trip for transport outside the free tram zone. The Myki card can be used on all trains, trams and buses.

Best apps for getting around: Public Transport Victoria provides a free app that has countdowns for trains, trams and buses. It shows locations for Myki retail outlets and includes a journey planner.


Taxis and Uber

Taxi: You can hail a taxi from the street or find them at taxi ranks at busy locations throughout the city. Taxis can be called in advance for a booking.

Uber:UberBLACK is available at designated spots at Tullamarine Airport. Costs are $87–$113 to the CBD from the airport. UberX and UberBLACK can be used within the city. UberX is available from Avalon Airport for $68–$92 to the CBD.
