Getting around Byron Bay and North Coast

Discover the best transport options to move from one attraction to another in Byron Bay and North Coast.

Byron Bay is a small town. Although the local government offers a fleet of buses to move in and out of the city, most people prefer to walk.

Walking tracks abound to major attractions such as the Cape Byron lighthouse, which is just on the outskirts of the town, and the beach is just a stone's throw away, too.

If you're hoping to explore further up or down the coast, it might be worth hiring a car for the flexibility it affords.

Below we have outlined all the transport options available in Byron Bay and North Coast which should help you to pick the best option for you.

Byron Bay and North Coast public transport

Types of transport: There are limited public transport options in Byron Bay and North Coast. NSW TrainLink operates trains which have stops in the North Coast towns of Wingham, Woolgoolga, Taree, Coffs Harbour, Ballina, Nambucca Heads and Grafton. Public buses are run by Blanch’s bus company in only six routes. The Byron Bay area is walkable but hiring a bicycle would allow you to explore more freely.

Paying for transport: Discovery Pass is the electronic card of NSW TrainLink that allows unlimited travel across 365 destinations along the east coast. You have the option to choose from 14/30/90/180 days passes as per your plans.

Freedom Pass and Weekly Freedom Pass offer unlimited travel in Blanch’s buses for 1 day and 7 days respectively. You can find more information here.

Getting to and from the airport: Several public and private buses (lines 640 and 641) run regularly from Ballina Airport to Byron Bay costing around $10 each way. If you're flying into the Gold Coast, airport transfers can be organised for a seamless travel.

Best apps for getting around: There is no official transport app for getting around Byron Bay and North Coast.

Taxis and Uber

Taxi: Although taxis can be hailed from the streets in Byron Bay, it is more convenient to book them over the phone or online.

Uber: You can book Uber as an alternative to taxis to get around the town or to reach Byron Bay from Ballina Airport at a cost of $45–$65.
