Gelato Messina are bringing out beer-flavoured gelato.

Beer. Flavoured. Gelato.

When we first heard word that inner west brewery The Grifter Brewing Co. had teamed up with our favourite ice cream dessert bar Gelato Messina to create a beer-flavoured gelato our first reaction was: “holy bajeesus”.

Followed quickly by a craving for anything Messina.

Hold out until Friday the 23rd of May, and that craving will be satiated by this intrinsic marriage of beer and ice cream in what is called a Cold War Hopfen-Weizen gelato (named directly after the beer it’s based on).

FYI Melbourne, it’ll be available in Messina stores your way, too.

But back to business. The beer itself is a special batch release of Grifter Brewing Co.’s that takes the old, German style of brewing, and throws in a curve-ball modern-day Kiwi twist.

"Cold War is a pretty emerging style in the beer world," says Grifter's Matt King. "It's a traditional German-based recipe. The yeast strain used will give off flavours of banana mixed with a slight clove spiciness."

Mix these in with some New Zealand hops, and you get a real citrus kick. "I tasted a few trial batches of the gelato," says Matt, "And all of these flavours really do shine through."

But that's not all. Matt's only tried and approved the straight beer gelato. The version you'll taste will have one special Messina addition: a smashing of holy-bajeesus-this-is-delicious salted caramel.

Let’s face it: you had us at beer-flavoured gelato, Messina.
