Mario Kart 8: amiibo compatibility list

Super Mario Maker (2)

In 1992, the Mario Kart series gave new meaning to sibling rivalry and twenty-four years on, it still remains the best way to settle an argument at a family gathering.

Do you remember the first time you were blue-shelled by your best friend? After fourteen years of bottling resentment, it's time to hit the tarmac again and settle the score with Mario Kart 8 on Nintendo Wii U. A lot has changed since the days of the Nintendo 64. Not the least of which is the amount of racers to choose from. The playable character roster has expanded from 8 to 36 and the latest line-up features characters from the extended Nintendo-verse, like Link and Villager, who bring with them unique vehicles and tracks.

It doesn't stop there. Mario Kart 8 is significantly larger in just about every way. There's 32 tracks to race (including 16 new and 16 returning tracks) and four brand-new power-ups: the boomerang, crazy eight, super horn and piranha plant.

If you're a seasoned karter, there's plenty of fresh content here to bring you back from your hiatus. What's more is you can bring your amiibo collection along for the ride. See below for amiibo functionality in Mario Kart 8.

How to use amiibo in Mario Kart 8
  • Unlock unique costumes

Tap any amiibo from the list below, and you will unlock a unique costume. The theme of each costume corresponds with the amiibo you tap. Ever wanted to race Captain Falcon or Sonic the Hedgehog against the Mushroom Kingdom? This is as close as you'll get for now.

  • Dress up your Mii racer

Once you've unlocked your Nintendo costumes, dress up your Mii avatar and take it online. It's the best way to show your Fox fandom or support for Samus to the rest of the world.
