Rocket League in esports: Everything you need to know

Rocket-Powered Mayhem

Rocket League as an esport may be the easiest to jump into without much knowledge thanks to the sheer simplicity of the game. Basically, it's the same as football (or soccer), where two teams square off to get a ball in the opposing goal in a limited time.

However, Rocket League has no rules on tackling, offside, fouls or even boundaries. Contained in a dome, the ball bounces around and players chase it down with their rocket-powered cars. These cars are able to flip through the air and blow up enemy players, using boosts at the right time to beat others to the ball.

Because of the absurd nature of flinging cars into a giant ball, matches are often just as much about luck as skill. However, in the esports domain, the game is taken to a whole new level of precision and amazing plays.

The Players

Esport matches of Rocket League are played in teams of three, but the standard game allows for a number of different combinations of players.

The Tournaments

The official competitive league for Rocket League is run by the game's publisher, Psyonix. Each year, a new season of tournaments is held, culminating at the end of the year with the Rocket League Championship Series grand finals. Teams must register three players and compete in playoff tournaments which are streamed live on Twitch.tv.
