CS:GO in esports: Everything you need to know

The original first person shooter on PC.

How CS:GO and esports work

Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) is a multiplayer online first person shooter from Valve. The game involves two teams, the Terrorists and the Counter-Terrorists, attempting to eliminate the other. There are also other game options, including free-for-all and objective-based modes. In the objective-based mode, a team must either plant a bomb or rescue a hostage successfully.

The players

CS:GO is a team-based game and allows six players to a team. In the competitive mode of the game, the Terrorist team must successfully plant a bomb and have it detonate without dying. The Counter-Terrorists must either kill the entire enemy team or defuse the bomb.

Unlike other esport teams, there are no real roles in the team due to each character having the same base abilities and skills, although some players may have preferences for certain guns and equipment but will usually play what their team needs or requires.

The tournaments in CS:GO are split into Premier Tournaments, Major Tournaments and Minor Tournaments.

Premier Tournaments offer some of the largest prize pools and are frequently played offline. This is the most prestigious level, and tournaments at this level are sponsored by huge companies and feature some of the best teams from all over the world. The biggest tournaments are held by the producers Valve. The CS:GO Major Championship is held annually to determine the best players in the world.

In order to get into a Premier Tournament, teams must compete in Major and Minor Tournaments to earn a place in the Qualifying Tournaments run by Valve. Smaller prize pools are still offered at this level, and although the prizes are much smaller than the Premier prizes, they are still nothing to brush over. Qualifying Tournaments are split into regions, with each region hosting an event in a major city to determine the best teams to send. Teams are split into brackets and must win to carry on or be knocked out. Once a team makes it to the top of the bracket, they have qualified for a specific Premier Tournament and can participate.
