Season 8 opener Winterfell voted 39th best Game of Thrones episode
Game of Thrones Season 8 has landed, and the premiere episode, Winterfell, wasn't quite the hit with fans as some of the other episodes.
Well that was an intriguing start, wasn’t it? In what will end up being the shortest episode of Season 8, Winterfell focused itself on moving the various chess pieces – read: key characters – towards the North and the titular castle home of House Stark. We won’t give away any spoilers here, other than to say Episode 1 was short on action and heavy on lingering looks, sharp one-liners and a sense of impending doom.
That last moment in particular; wow! Talk about pouring ice on a relatively happy run of reunions! (Emphasis on “relatively”.)
But where did Episode 1 of Season 8 rank among the 73-episode legacy of Game of Thrones? Did Game of Thrones Season 8 start with as big a bang as the previous season premieres? Well, the fans have spoken.
We've been running an evolving rank of the best Game of Thrones episodes ever, based upon the votes of fans on IMDB. And with over 23,000 votes now posted for Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 1, we can confirm that Winterfell left fans a little cold.
It's a relative score, of course. Across every episode, Game of Thrones has averaged an extraordinary 9.1 out of 10 rating, so the 8.9 posted by the Season 8 Episode 1 premiere is still very high when compared to, say, any Steven Seagal film. But it was still only enough to see it come 39th overall when compared against its peers. Bummer!
However, it does compare more favourably to the other seven Game of Thrones season premieres. The average of these 8 episodes is a more modest 8.8, with the Winterfell episode coming in third overall. This puts it behind just the premiere of Season 4, Two Swords, and the very first ever episode, Winter is Coming.
