Foxtel just put its prices up: how much more will you pay?

Foxtel just put its prices up

From April, you'll be spending more for pay TV: here are all the details.

Aussies, your pay TV fix just became a little more expensive.

From 7 April 2016, Foxtel will be lifting prices for all customers across its packages. Both new signups and existing customers will be affected. Customers have begun receiving emails outlining the changes.

The big change is in the basic Entertainment pack, which is the minimum requirement for all Foxtel subscribers. That goes up $1 a month, from $25 to $26.

There are bigger increases in the price for Foxtel's dedicated Greek and Italian channels (both up from $20 to $23 a month) and for the Adults Only channel, up from $27 to $30.

We've outlined all the changes in the table below (including a total for how many channels each bundle includes).

Package# channelsOld priceNew price
Entertainment Pack46$25.00$26.00
Sports9$25.00$25.00
Movies9$20.00$20.00
Entertainment Plus9$10.00$10.00
Kids6$10.00$10.00
Drama6$20.00$20.00
Docos9$10.00$10.00
RAI Italia1$20.00$23.00
Antenna Pacific1$20.00$23.00
Adults Only1$27.00$30.00
Sky Racing2$5.00$5.00

A $12-a-year increase is unlikely to see many Foxtel subscribers cancelling their subscription, especially as the price rise comes just as the AFL and NRL seasons are launching. Sport remains the main driver for pay TV subscriptions, and one Foxtel is keen to maintain in the wake of fierce competition for other genres from streaming services like Netflix and Stan.

Its own Presto service frequently doesn't have a significant overlap with Foxtel's own broadcasts. (You can check out what will be new across all three services in March in our detailed guide.)

Recent research suggests that Foxtel subscribers typically only watch eight of the channels on offer, but given that the Entertainment pack is included in all bundles, you'll have to pay up no matter what your favourite channel is.

Why am I being charged for entertainment plus as an extra, now that I have combined Foxtel with a Telstra entertainment bundle? I was told it would be cheaper after being with Foxtel for years.

      Hi Jan!

      Thanks for the comment.

Telstra’s Entertainment Bundle has an Entertainment Package included not Entertainment Plus. Therefore, if you continue with Entertainment Plus Package, it will be billed as an add-on to your bundle.

It would be best to call this out with Telstra to understand your inclusions on the plan.

      Hope this helps.

      Cheers,
      Jonathan

My package is up for renewal on 22/4/16 and with all the competition available now like Stan etc what can a long term customer expect from Foxtel without any further cost.

      Hi Mike,

You’ve come through to finder.com.au. Foxtel doesn’t officially offer an incentive for staying, but it would be worth chatting with them before exiting. You can contact Foxtel on 13 19 99.

      Thanks,
      Brodie
