Kayo vs Optus Sport: Which service offers more for football fans?
Kayo and Optus Sport were Australia's first dedicated sports streaming services.
When it comes to Kayo vs Optus Sport, it's no longer just a question of which football leagues you'd like to access. Due to the licensing agreement between beIN Sports and Foxtel group ending, Kayo no longer has the round ball game at all.
It means there is a simple choice to make when it comes to Kayo vs Optus Sport. If your primary focus is football - specifically the Premier League, Women's Super League, European international matches, La Liga, J League and K League - then you need Optus Sport. For just about every other sport, you should consider Kayo, as it has over 50 sports on offer.
Key differences between Kayo and Optus Sport
There are additional points worth noting when making a decision between Kayo Sports and Optus Sport:
- Kayo is the significantly cheaper Fox Sports package than what's available through Foxtel, with a difference of almost $50 between the comparable Foxtel Sports HD pack and Kayo. It means that signing up for both Kayo and Optus Sport is still cheaper than the full 4K Foxtel iQ offering.
- Optus Sport only has football (soccer). Kayo doesn't have football but still has over 50 sports. This includes big Australian competitions such as NRL, AFL and virtually all cricket. It also has the much-loved big American leagues the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL.
Kayo vs Optus Sport at a glance
Kayo vs Optus Sport: Price
The entry price point for both services is similar, but that's with Optus having less content on offer and without even mentioning all the viewing features Kayo Sports has. Not only does Kayo have a superior app too, it manages to do this while running programs from many different broadcasters.
If you want more simultaneous streams, you're able to pay more with Kayo to get this option. With Optus, you can register up to 4 devices on your account, but you can only have 1 stream at a time.
Selected eligible Optus customers however can get Optus Sport for $6.99 a month instead of the full price, while Kayo offers no such regular discount.
Neither service offers a free trial, so you're paying from the first moment you sign up as a new customer.
Devices
Both Kayo and Optus Sport are compatible with the majority of modern devices.

The 2 services are accessible across most of the same devices, except for a few minor differences. Kayo has the advantage of being accessible on the PlayStation 5 and 1 extra model of smart TV, Hisense. Optus Sport meanwhile is available on the Xbox and set-top media streaming boxes such as Fetch TV and Foxtel iQ.
Which is better, Optus Sport or Kayo?
All along, the choice of Kayo vs Optus Sport comes down to which sports you like to watch, what device you use to stream and how much you're willing to pay. If you're fine with just watching football and especially the EPL, you could happily get by on only Optus Sport. Kayo does and no doubt will continue to offer a wider variety of sports, so you have more on offer, all at a similar price.
Both services have locked away long term deals to their signature sports, so you'll know what the main draws on both services will be well into the future to keep you coming back. Optus Sport has tied up the Premier League until 2028, while also obtaining La Liga. In recent years Kayo has made the call to ditch the likes of tennis, soccer and rugby union, while locking away the AFL, NRL and cricket on long term deals. However, if you're a Premier League fan and also love your Australian sports, then you'll have to fork out for both.
If there is more than 1 sports fan in your household and you want multiple streams to watch different sports at the same time, then you can only do this on Kayo. Optus Sport only allows 1 stream at a time.
Both services are available across a similar range of devices, and it would come down to your personal streaming preferences as to which service suits you better. For example, if you stream through a PS5, then you can only access Kayo. If you use an Xbox for streaming, then Optus Sport is the only option available to you.
If you're an existing eligible Optus customer and want to get a sports streaming service at a discount, then you only get this opportunity with Optus Sport.
But from a general sports viewing perspective, the range of sports and viewing features on Kayo gets it over the line.
