Here's a sneaky way to top up your Velocity Points total.

Gift card deal alert! Coles will be offering 2,000 bonus flybuys points for purchasers of its $100 Coles Gift Mastercard and Uber gift cards this week.

The deal is confirmed in the current Coles catalogue and applies to gift card purchases from 2 May to 8 May 2018.

We're fans of "open" gift cards like the Coles Gift Mastercard because you can spend the funds you put on them on anything you want, meaning you can get the bonus points for close to nothing. Note that there is a $5 service fee for the Gift Mastercard, so it's not entirely free, but by our calculations the points you earn will still end up being worth more than $5.

There's no service charge for the Uber card, so if you're a regular Uber passenger, that's a very pain-free way to earn some extra points.

The same bonus points offer also applies to Restaurant Choice gift cards, but that's a more restrictive purchase and arguably of more use as an actual gift card than for day-to-day purchases.

THE POINTS FINDER TAKE

If you're a regular Uber user, the Uber gift card is effectively offering you free points. The Coles Gift Mastercard is also a solid deal.

Points Finder always advocates converting flybuys points into Velocity Points, since you can get more value from them that way. You can convert 2,000 bonus flybuys points to 870 Velocity points for use on Virgin Australia.

Coles regularly offers gift card deals with bonus flybuys points; indeed, it had an identical offer on the Coles Gift Mastercard back in March, and a similar deal for EFTPOS gift cards last month.

As usual, you can only score the bonus points once per flybuys household, so don't think about buying multiple cards. For more on how flybuys works and how to earn more points through it, check out our detailed guide.
