South America has long been seen as an expensive commute from Australia, but lately return flights are becoming more and more affordable. Only last week we saw LATAM, Qantas and Emirates offering flights from $1024 return to Santiago. Now, Qantas has dropped the dollars even further with flights to the Chilean capital starting from just $981 return.

This $981 price tag is for flights from Melbourne to Santiago, with flights from other major cities including Brisbane, Adelaide, Sydney and Hobart on sale too. Sample flights from these locations include Brisbane to Santiago from $986 return, Adelaide to Santiago from $1006 return, Sydney to Santiago from $1013 return and Hobart to Santiago from $1143 return.

These sale flights are for select travel dates between May and September 2017. True, this includes Santiago's wintry wet months, but it also includes the more favourable autumn and spring months of May and September.

Checked baggage, meals and in-flight entertainment are all included in the flight price. The only direct flight in this sale is Sydney to Santiago. All other flights include a stopover in either Sydney or Auckland. This Qantas deal is not part of any particular promotion and is available until sold out.
