The further north you go up the coast of Queensland, the more you will pay for flights. From destinations around Australia, you can expect to pay between $200 and $600 for domestic flights to Queensland depending on the time of year you're travelling. Jetstar and hold frequent flight sales, with deals to the Gold Coast and Brisbane.
The cheapest time to fly to Queensland is in February and May. If you want to avoid the crowds that come along with travelling during peak season and extreme hot weather, you're in luck with these months being the cheapest to travel during. In February, you'll see blue skies and weather that is ideal for visiting theme parks, hiking and water activities. In most Australian states, the school holidays are over and there aren't as many people flocking to the beach and popular attractions around the Gold Coast and Brisbane.
In May, you'll experience milder weather, but as a result, fewer people will be around. Who doesn't love being at the front of the line at theme parks? If you're heading to the north of Queensland, May provides great weather for land and sea adventures, but you may see an inflation in accommodation and transport hire. Skyscanner data shows that flying to Townsville from Melbourne is cheapest in November, so if you love a buzzing atmosphere, warm nights and the sun glistening over the ocean, book your flights for the second last month of the year.
If you know the exact dates you want to travel, it is best to book your flights four to seven weeks in advance. Booking last-minute flights to Queensland is not recommended as there tends to be a significant spike in price.
Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia all service direct domestic flights across Queensland. Virgin Australia offers flights to more regional airports in Queensland, but you will have to make a stopover along the way. No airlines offer direct flights from Perth or Adelaide to Townsville, but you can get a connecting flight, with Brisbane being the most common stopover location.
When booking your accommodation, see if an airport shuttle service is offered, as this can save time and money. You'll find car hire kiosks for companies including Avis, Budget and Europcar in airports across Queensland. Alternatively, head to the rideshare drop-off and pick-up area to get an Uber from the airport. If you have an early flight, some rideshare companies let you to request a ride well in advance so you don't have to risk missing your flight.
