Halfway between Darwin and Adelaide, Alice Springs has all the makings of a great outback adventure. Often seen as the gateway to the Red Centre, from here, you can travel north, through Kings Canyon and Uluru enroute to Kakadu and Darwin. Head south through Coober Pedy and the wine regions of South Australia onto its capital, Adelaide. Or, stick around the area and explore the arresting sites of the MacDonnell Ranges and the Larapinta Trail.

Thanks for Virgin Australia, you won't have to max out your credit card to there either. Nor will you have to go it alone, thanks to its latest #MatesRates sale which sees fares to the Alice discounted to $179 each way when you travel in groups of 2-8.

The cheapest trips on offer depart from Adelaide, getting you there and back for $358 per person. For a domestic fare that sounds quite steep, but considering no budget airlines fly into Alice Springs, it's one of the best deals you can get to the city. Your other alternative is to fly in with Qantas, which is currently advertising flights between Adelaide and Alice Springs from $235. Which is quite a jump if we do say so ourselves.

To be eligible for these prices, you'll have to travel between 11 October 2017 and 27 March 2018. This is the city's low-tourist season however temperatures do spike past 30°C. To keep you cool though are numerous events and festivals including Desert Mob (7 September - 22 October), Yapa Styles Fashion Festival (21 October) and the Town Council Night Markets (1 August - 30 November).

Depending on the route, blackout dates or limited seating may be available during peak periods.

Other sample fares include: Darwin to Alice Springs from $199 each way and Melbourne to Alice Springs from $229 each way. See below for the full list of flights on sale.

Flights can be booked direct through Virgin Australia and are available until 11:59pm AEST on Sunday, 30 July 2017.
