Flight war: Air New Zealand takes flights to California down to $859 return

Stephanie Yip 7 December 2018 NEWS

That's $30 less than Virgin Australia.

It's all about who can score the cheapest flights into the USA right now and Air New Zealand is currently leading the charge with fares as low as $859 return.

That price-point is for flights out of the Gold Coast to either Los Angeles or San Francisco.

If you're flying out of other cities, you won't be too much more out of pocket. Fares from Melbourne start from $869 return while flights from Sydney start from $889 return.

There are also flights to Chicago on sale from $1,179 return for anyone looking to visit somewhere cooler.

Travel is during the peak seasons of summer (July - September).

Start checking out your dates now through Air New Zealand.

And don't forget, to score these deals you will have to book by 11 December.

How good are these USA fares?

  • Price: Great. Just a few days back Virgin Australia launched its California sale with Los Angeles flights from $889 return. With a starting price of $859 these are $30 cheaper than its lowest fare. Plus, they also include peak summer dates and San Francisco and Chicago trips, which Virgin Australia's sale does not.
  • Airline: Great. Air New Zealand is regarded as one of the best airlines in the world. It's a full service airline so you also don't have to pay a cent extra for checked luggage, meals and entertainment.
  • Travel time: Good. From Australia all flights include a stopover in Auckland. It's not the most ideal way to get there as Virgin Australia and Qantas fly the route direct but is good if you want to stop by New Zealand or break up your trip.
  • Weather: Great. July and August are the USA's peak summer holiday dates. If you'd prefer to avoid the masses, choose to fly during September instead.
