An international SIM card is a handy addition to any frequent flyer's arsenal, but it can get a little annoying having to swap out SIM cards every time you leave and return to your home country.

That's where Flexiroam X comes in. The flagship product of the international telco, Flexiroam X is a small adhesive microchip that you stick onto your existing SIM card to enable international data roaming when travelling the world. This effectively turns your regular SIM card into an international SIM card without affecting your standard mobile service when you're back home.

Attach the Flexiroam microchip sticker to your SIM and access data roaming in over 140+ countries.

How does Flexiroam work?

After attaching the Flexiroam X microchip to your SIM card, it's a simple matter of downloading the app and activating your service from within it. Once activated, your regular mobile service will be turned off and all network traffic will be routed through your Flexiroam connection. This is to prevent you from inadvertently racking up global roaming charges from your home telco.

Can I make and receive calls with Flexiroam?

Flexiroam is strictly a data-only service. As soon as you activate it through the app, you will no longer be able to make or receive traditional phone calls, even if you're still in your home country. By deactivating your regular mobile service, Flexiroam ensures you won't incur unwanted global roaming charges from your telco back home.

Should you need to make calls while using Flexiroam, you have two options. You can either temporarily deactivate the microchip via the app and accept whatever global roaming rates your regular telco charges or you can use an Internet calling service like Skype or Google Hangouts to make calls with your data connection.

How much does a Flexiroam X cost?

Because Flexiroam X is a data-only service, you don't have to worry about call rates changing from country to country – you pay a single price for data access across the 140+ countries covered by the service.

To get started, you can choose from a variety of data packs that range in size from 1GB up to 7GB. Expiry periods vary from just 15 days up to a full 360 days, with pricing starting at US$49.99. You'll also need to pay shipping costs for the SIM which can differ considerably depending on where you live.

There are also plenty of top-up options once you exhaust the data included with your starter pack. These start from as low as 100MB with a 10-day expiry for US$7.99 and go all the way up to 11GB with a 390-day expiry.

If you plan on spending the majority of your time overseas in a single country, you may want to consider Flexiroam's local data packs. These packs operate on shorter expiries than the standard packs and only provide data access in the country they're purchased for, but they're significantly cheaper than their worldwide counterparts. They also benefit from further discounts if you purchase them well ahead of your trip, with up to 70% off when you order more than 90 days in advance.
