First look: See Showpo’s Bridal Collection before it launches
Can you find a show-stopping wedding dress for under $500? Yes, as it turns out, it is possible. Showpo's Bridal Collection has made it so.
We recently had a chance to see the newest additions to the ever-growing Showpo collective in the flesh – the new Showpo Bridal Collection. And let me tell you, these gowns didn't disappoint in the slightest.
Priced between $200 and $250, with one lone dress coming in at $350, it was hard to expect too much from these dresses that promised so much in the beautiful lookbook pictures. But these gowns went far beyond my expectations.
The eight dress collection features classic simple styles as well as glitsy eyecatchers with all the bells and whistles – lace, trains, buttons and chiffon. And the designs vary enough to please every kind of bride.
Now, lets talk fabric. For $200, you can't expect liquid silks and feathery organza. And I'm not going to pretend that the fabrics in these dresses are equal to the delicately beaded chiffon of Jenny Packham or the fluffy silk-crepe of Vera Wang. The fabrics used are not premium, and in some instances, you could tell when grabbing and touching the textile.
But when it comes to the smaller details, those little features that can reveal the true cost of a wedding dress, Showpo passed with flying colours. The stitching was flawless and the draping looked masterful. For me, the biggest tell-tale of a cheap dress are the buttons and I was genuinely surprised at how well made the buttons on the "Put A Ring On It" gown appear to be.
I had a chance to actually meet one of Showpo's bridal designers who was in the midst of sketching new designs. No, Showpo did not bulk buy these from some factory off-shore. These styles were conceived and designed in-house and created around the desires of us, the Showpo shopper.
Every element of the designs has been considered and keeping to an accessible price point is key. I saw one sketch of a beautiful gown with a striking full skirt. When I asked if we'd be seeing that design anytime soon, I was told that the team was still working out a way to create it for an affordable cost without compromising on the quality. And it was easy to see how this paradigm echos through the entire bridal collection, bridesmaids dresses and accessories included.
So, will brides want to wear Showpo on their big day? Yes, I think so. If you're looking for an affordable alternative, Showpo's bridal gowns deliver in spades. And with a range of clever accessories and fun options for bridesmaids of all shapes and sizes, Showpo is well-placed to become a full-service destination for discerning brides.
The gowns are available to purchase online from 30 May and will come in sizes 4-20. You can return them of course if the size isn't right for you. You can head over to the Showpo wedding shop to sign up to find out more about the launch.
