Finland is probably the single best country in the world to see the famous aurora borealis, with its extensive dark season and consistently clear skies. Unfortunately it's right across the world from Australia, and there's usually no such thing as a cheap flight to Finland.

An exception has arrived though. Right now you have a chance to sneak into Finland via Japan, with flights from $826 return on journeys from Melbourne, in October and November 2017, one of the prime times for viewing the Northern Lights.

This is the only cheap route from Australia to Finland, and you need to pounce whenever the low-price window opens. The window has slid open on a handful of occasions throughout 2017 (in January, February and July), and now it's done so once again.

The catch is that you'll have to be a bit wily with your bookings, and book separate flights to Japan with Qantas, and Finland with British Airways. You also have a mandatory Tokyo holiday on the way there and back, in the form of a fairly extensive overnight stopover.

Is it worth it? Almost certainly, as long as you remember to rug up, because it's probably going to be subzero every day.

Search for flights to Helsinki below, for travel dates during October and November 2017, and let Skyscanner pick out the most affordable route.
