What you need to know about VEJA: a sneaker brand with a focus on transparency, organic materials and fair trade sourcing.

The first time I ever heard of VEJA, I was mindlessly scrolling through THE ICONIC and spotted a pair of cute, trendy sneakers. They caught my attention because they're part of THE ICONIC's Considered edit which features brands offering sustainable and ethical products.

About VEJA

VEJA is a French footwear brand that was founded in 2004 by friends Sébastien Kopp and François Morillion.

"Veja" is the Portuguese-Brazilian translation for "look". In an interview with High Snobiety, Morillion said, "It means to look beyond the sneakers, look how they are made."

How does it stand out from other sneaker brands? VEJA has a strong focus on using ecological and sustainable materials, as well as being socially responsible.

Organic Cotton. VEJA uses cotton grown in the North-East of Brazil. The cotton and food crops are created without chemicals or pesticides. This helps return nutrients to the soil, rather than causing damage.

Wild Rubber from the Amazon. The sneaker's soles are made out of wild rubber from the Amazon Rainforest, the only place where you can find naturally grown rubber.

Ecological leather. VEJA uses vegetable-tanned leather. During this unique process, it's coloured with organic compounds like acacia extracts and doesn't produce the same high levels of pollution as typical leather manufacturing.

Vegan leather. VEJA also offers a range of shoes made from vegan leather and suede. The leather is made from a combination of organic cotton and resin, a waste by-product of the corn industry.

Recycled plastic bottles. You can also buy shoes made from bottles collected from the streets of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The bottles are crushed and transformed into a waterproof material used as the sole of the sneaker. It takes around three bottles to make one pair of shoes.

In terms of maintaining social responsibility, VEJA shoes are made in South Brazil in a factory that respects the standards of work established by the International Labour Organisation. At least 80% of workers are unionised.

VEJA style

The overall style of VEJA sneakers is classic, minimalist and simple. Take your pick from a lace-up style or a self-fastening strap. There are also children's sizes available.

We turned to THE ICONIC and HYPE DC to determine which were the most popular and best-selling styles.

The Esplar is VEJA's basic leather shoe. The shape is sleek, with a moderately sized sole. The style has full-length eyelet panels and a bold V logo. You can pick from one of the many colour options for around $160.

The V-10 is VEJA's 10th-anniversary silhouette that has stuck around for a long time. It features a multi-panelled leather upper, sitting on top of a chunky rubber sole. You've got your standard bold branding with the rubber V logo, as well as a perforated toe box. Prices sit around the $200 mark and as usual, there are several colours to choose from.

Keen to try a pair for yourself? You can shop from retailers like THE ICONIC, HYPE DC, David Jones and NET-A-PORTER.

You can also shop directly from the VEJA store. However, it's not an Australia based store so shipping could take a while. Also, you have to spend 150 euros and over to qualify for free shipping.
