Finder Green Fave: Modibodi period underwear

Comfortable, reusable undies that keep you feeling dry while keeping disposable pads and tampons out of the landfill.

Let's talk periods. They're a monthly occurrence for many people and are typically dealt with by using tampons, pads or panty liners. And why not? They're readily accessible and can be disposed of easily.

But they're also made from non-biodegradable plastics and take at least 500 years to decompose.

If you're looking for a sustainable alternative, period underpants such as Modibodi might be the solution.

What makes Modibodi underwear eco-friendly?

Modibodi is a brand of reusable underwear that's constructed with extra lining layers to capture your period, pee and sweat. Essentially, they're undies with an in-built fabric pad.

This keeps you feeling dry during your time of the month while keeping pad and tampon plastics out of the environment.

The material used to construct the panties is natural and biodegradable. There's soft bamboo to fight bacteria and repel odours and merino wool fibre to absorb fluids.

This merino wool is 100% biodegradable.

Follow the care instructions and each pair of panties should last between six months and two years.

When it no longer keeps you leak-free, you can reuse it as a rag or send it to your nearest textile recycling centre for another lease on life.

I personally prefer H&M as you can receive 15% off your next purchase for every bag of textiles you send to be recycled.

We tried it and loved it

I've been wearing Modibodi period panties for a few months now and am pleasantly surprised at how well it performs.

For one, it's super comfortable. Now, I wouldn't say it feels like normal underwear as the gusset of layers is 3mm thick, but it does feel more comfortable than wearing a standard pad.

It also keeps me leak-free and feeling relatively dry throughout the day. I won't sugar-coat this: similar to wearing a pad, you'll likely feel a little moisture down there.

But trust in the panties as between the waterproof layer and the absorbency layer, I have had no accidents to date. Just remember to choose the right level of absorbency (light-moderate, moderate-heavy, heavy-overnight, maxi-24 hours) for your day ahead.

As for washing? The pre-rinsing is a little inconvenient, but after that's done, it's a matter of popping it into your washing and drying it as normal.

Because you have to wash after every use, you can't get away with buying just one pair. As my period doesn't last more than a few days, I've been able to get away with three pairs and a stack of diligent washing.

If your period is quite long, Modibodi sells bundle packs of five to seven undies for a discount.

Where can I get it?

Modibodi underpants start at $24.50 per pair and can be purchased through its online store.

This starting price gets you a light-moderate classic bikini. Not your style? No sweat. Modibodi sells bikini, seamfree, boyleg, hi-waist, full brief, brief and boyshorts – and all in multiple grades of absorbency to suit your flow. A thong option is available in a super light absorbancy.

On top of period underwear, Modibodi sells period-proof swimwear and activewear.
