Finder Green Fave: INIKA Organic Phytofuse Renew Caviar Lime Exfoliator

This Australian-made exfoliator is vegan, has 100% natural ingredients and comes in biodegradable packaging.

What we put on our skin can have a big impact on how it feels and how it looks. The trend of including natural ingredients in products has been around for years now – and INIKA Organic has put nature at the heart of its range. It considers both the ingredients (including ethical sourcing) and the packaging, with a goal to create a "cleaner beauty space free from toxic chemicals".

All the products are certified 100% vegan and cruelty-free. INIKA Organic also has other certifications for organic and natural ingredients, as well as Halal options. The Phytofuse Renew range – which includes this exfoliator – is also infused with 5% active botanicals.

What makes INIKA Organic's Phytofuse Renew Caviar Lime Exfoliator green?

Let's start with the packaging: this exfoliator comes in a box made from responsibly-harvested FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) paper. Inside the box is a 75ml tube made from sugar cane – which is biodegradable – and a plastic lid that's recyclable.

The exfoliator's all-natural ingredient list includes organic aloe vera juice, avocado oil and rosehip oil as well as Australian finger lime (also known as "caviar lime") and probiotics. The actual exfoliating particles are made from natural pumice stone and bamboo stem powder.

As well as listing the technical names for each ingredient, INIKA Organic prints the common names in bold, which makes it easier to see what you're actually putting on your skin. It's also made in Australia, which can help keep "product miles" down compared to exfoliators made overseas and transported here.

We tried it and like it

I was sent a sample of INIKA Organic Phytofuse Renew Caviar Lime Exfoliator and have been using it every two to three days for about four weeks to see what impact it had on my skin over time.

The first time I used it, I noticed my face was softer and smoother after I'd exfoliated and dried it. I've had the same feeling every time since, which hasn't been the case with exfoliators I've used in the past. The pores around my nose were also noticeably cleaner after exfoliating (I have found that with most products though).

INIKA Organic also had the Phytofuse Renew Caviar Lime Exfoliator independently tested at a lab, using an imaging machine that measures skin changes (the Miravex Antera 3D). After 28 days, the results showed a 19% improvement in brightness and clarity and an 18% improvement in skin texture. All the participants agreed the product was gentle on their skin, and 97% experienced an increase in skin firmness and elasticity.

I can't say I noticed any of these changes, but that could be due to the frequency of my use, or the fact that the sample size for the study was small (30 people aged 25-65). Still, I do like the short-term outcomes I've had so far and will keep using it.

One detail to keep in mind though: while I find the actual exfoliator very nice on my skin and really enjoy the smell, I struggle to keep the exfoliating particles out of my eyes. That happens to me with every exfoliator though, so it might be the way I apply it. But it's worth mentioning just in case anyone else out there has the same problem.
