What we know so far:

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them is a trilogy of movies set in the Harry Potter universe, following the adventures of Newt Scamander in 1920s New York. True fans will recognise Fantastic Beasts as one of Harry’s textbooks from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. In 2001, it became an actual, real book Muggles could buy, when J.K. Rowling penned and released it in aid of Comic Relief.

Rowling is also writing the screenplay for all three Fantastic Beasts movies, so this is as close to a new Harry Potter novel as we’re likely to get. David Yates (Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2) is directing.

Apart from a brief mention of the Salem Witches Institute in Goblet of Fire, this will be the first time we’ve seen the wizarding world extended across the pond – literally thousands of fan fictions notwithstanding, of course. Seeing as Newt Scamander made his name for writing about fantastic beasts, you have to wonder what sort he’ll find in New York. Three headed sewer rats? Mail carrying pigeons? Wait, WILL HE INVENT COCKROACH CLUSTERS?

Dear Merlin, I hope not.

While we know very, very little thus far, quite frankly J.K. Rowling could release a Harry Potter haiku and we’d still be like:

Rumours and theories:

  • Daniel Radcliffe hasn’t ruled out appearing in the movie. “[Harry Potter] could return if time travel rears its head again. I’ll be intrigued to see what [J.K. Rowling] does.” –
