Sally McMullen
Hey chicks, I'm Sal.
Alex Hourigan
And I'm Al.
Sally McMullen
And this is Two Broke Chicks, the show that dishes life lessons for the gals, from the gals and we are back with another fabulous mini episode of Fact or Cap. If you're new here, basically every week, Al and I put, like, a viral trend, challenge, something we've heard on the street to the test.
Alex Hourigan
Street.
Sally McMullen
The street, basically to do it for you so you don't have to, and then you can see if it's legit. And this week, we're doing something that we are very well versed at, I would say, which is hangover hacks. So we've pulled together a list of a bunch of hacks that we've seen on TikTok, Instagram and just also, like, old wives tales when it comes to curing a hangover. Little disclaimer, of course, we're not doctors. So you know, if you're having any serious issues, seek the help of a professional. And of course, the best cure for a hangover is prevention and drinking responsibly. So no binge drinking, that's absolutely not what we are advocating for today. But if you are feeling a little bit dusty this weekend, we've you know, we've got some hacks for you.
Alex Hourigan
You know, everyone's human.
Sally McMullen
Okay, let's get into it. The first one that we had is one that I've seen all over TikTok recently, which is filling up a bowl with ice cold water and then chucking ice cubes in it. And then essentially, you submerge your head into the ice water for as long as you can without passing out. I saw varying lengths of time, but you know, 10 seconds is probably long enough. So Alex and I went out on the weekend for one of our friend Helena's birthday. So I was well and truly ready to try this hack on Saturday morning. It was an experience.
Alex Hourigan
I really liked it. I don't know if I'm a sociopath.
Sally McMullen
It definitely wakes you up and you feel really fresh when you're doing it. I felt like it gave me a little bit of a headache, like a brain freeze, though. I was like, you know, it was a bit painful.
Alex Hourigan
I kind of felt like I was in a spy movie and I was getting, like, waterboarded but I was doing it to myself.
Sally McMullen
Oh my god, this is a fantasy I haven't heard of.
Alex Hourigan
I don't know if it completely got rid of my hangover, but I, I liked the feeling of it.
Sally McMullen
It definitely makes you feel more refreshed. It's supposed to help, like, reduce some of the inflammation and puffiness that happens when you are hungover. But I also think an easier thing to do is maybe have a cold shower, or get one of those ice rollers that you can put in your freezer or fridge and then roll that all over your face. Because the worst thing for me is that I, like, looked at all of these ice cubes I just used to dunk my head in and I was like, I would just prefer that in a drink.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah, but sometimes standing in a shower by yourself after a hangover can be a very confronting thing, Sally. Like, sometimes I can't be alone when I'm hungover. Like it's too.
Sally McMullen
Everybody hurts.
Alex Hourigan
Legit, like it, no. Like, and your body's, like, shaking and like the idea of standing in the shower just ain't it. So if I can sit in bed, and waterboard myself with a bowl of ice cold water, I'm gonna do that.
Sally McMullen
So is that a fact or cap?
Alex Hourigan
I'd say it's a fact because I felt better.
Sally McMullen
Me too.
Alex Hourigan
I liked it.
Sally McMullen
Didn't completely cure your hangover, but it definitely gave you, you know.
Alex Hourigan
A bit of zhush.
Sally McMullen
Yeah.
Alex Hourigan
It's kind of like the same as getting in the ocean when you've got a hangover. Like, that's always a really good cure for me if, like, the weather's okay is like really dragging my sack of bones to the water and just, like, a baptismal cleanse in the ocean really sorts you out. Like that, without a doubt in my mind is, like, the number one for me.
Sally McMullen
Salt water will always cure what ails ya. But the next hack that we saw on TikTok is taking a Claratyne, or like an antihistamine, before you go to bed. So the chick who I saw do this actually took it before she started drinking. Do not do that. Your liver isn't going to like that, do not mix medication with alcohol. That is one disclaimer. So the other one is taking it after, I think that's how are you supposed to actually do it. Because I believe that the antihistamine helps reduce the inflammation that comes with a hangover, which is one of the major things that causes you to feel sick the next day. So did you do this?
Alex Hourigan
I did. I know that I talked a lot of shit when you texted me being like, "Don't forget to take your Claratyne".
Sally McMullen
She goes, "F*ck the Claratyne". I was like, "Alright, just trying to do it for the good of the pod".
Alex Hourigan
I know, I took it for the good of the pod but I really didn't feel like it. I hate taking tablets.
Sally McMullen
Yeah, that's true.
Alex Hourigan
So like the idea of doing that when I'm, like, crawling into bed was just not the vibe but I was like, they're tiny little tablets, so it's okay.
Sally McMullen
And what did you think?
Alex Hourigan
What did you think?
Sally McMullen
It didn't work.
Alex Hourigan
Not at all
Sally McMullen
Because often I'll take two Nurofen and then sometimes Panadol as well before I go to bed and drink a shitload of water and then that often helps. And then I'll have Nurofen and Panadol next to the bed to take when I wake up too and that usually helps. But this didn't do anything.
Alex Hourigan
Didn't do shit.
Sally McMullen
I like, looked into it a little further, apparently it helps more if you're drinking red wine. But yeah, I would say that this one is a cap.
Alex Hourigan
I would agree. This one's my, one of my personal favourites. It's a good old Maccas order. You can't go wrong with a Maccas order on a morning that you just feeling a bit shit because you know what? Nothing will hit more than that crispy Coke or Sprite.
Sally McMullen
My hangover cure every time is, like, the selection of beverages. Like. that will make or break the experience and you need icy cold water with ice cubes, a crispy coke. If it's from Maccas or like one of those Soda Stream things, like that is the best way to go. And then depending on how I feel, I need a soy iced latte with a shitload of ice. But it needs to be like, once the, you know, the Coca Cola and the water has done its thing. But back to the Maccas thing, I saw that apparently when you have a hangover and when you drink alcohol, it increases the production of this neurochemical in your brain that is the same one that makes you crave greasy food. So that's why you crave McDonald's and the like, or like a kebab, you know after you've been drinking. So it actually does feed that craving. So I know it's probably not good for you but there's a reason why it works every time. I don't care what anybody says, when people are like, "I have a green juice and an acai bowl", I'm like get out of here.
Alex Hourigan
I'm like, I have 20 chicken nuggets and a cheeseburger with extra pickles.
Sally McMullen
Literally.
Alex Hourigan
Because I'm a normal person. I can't do coffee the next morning from being hungover, like the milk? It's gotta be, like, an icy cold water, the crispy coke and then an orange juice.
Oh, an orange juice.
Yes.
Sally McMullen
That's an outlier that I wouldn't have picked.
Alex Hourigan
The Maccas orange juice, she got a special place in my heart.
Sally McMullen
So, greasy food,
Alex Hourigan
Fact!
Sally McMullen
An absolute fact.
Alex Hourigan
Fact.
Sally McMullen
This next one is also a suggestion from Al. Take it away.
Alex Hourigan
Oh, this is shady of you because we both know who this would benefit more.
Sally McMullen
Whatever. I don't do it though.
Alex Hourigan
Maybe you should.
Sally McMullen
Maybe I should.
Alex Hourigan
Everyone knows this, but a tac vom.
Sally McMullen
Tactical vomit, for those who aren't familiar.
Alex Hourigan
A tactical vom honestly will sort you out for the next day. I'm not encouraging any type of unhealthy behaviour. But if you feel sick and you feel like you need to vomit that night, just get it out of your system. I hate vomiting. I have, like, a phobia of it and I cry every time.
Sally McMullen
So do I, actually.
Alex Hourigan
But the next day I'm always like, that feels good. Because if you just, if you just keep it in there, it's just that like, alcoholic poisoning that's staying in there that's just going to make you feel worse. So if you get it out and get it out of your system, you feel 10 times better. I'm not good at a tac vom. It needs to happen at the end of the night because I'm not one of those cute people that can like go to the bathroom, just be like bleh, and then they're back out on the d-floor.
Sally McMullen
Oh no. Oh my god, no.
Alex Hourigan
Like doing the shuffle and having another drink and being like. That's not me. It is like an exorcism.
Sally McMullen
Yeah.
Alex Hourigan
In the bathroom when I'm in there having a vom.
Sally McMullen
Oh, yeah. I've been in there with you.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah. Well, now, now. Come on now.
Sally McMullen
You have someone to hold your hair, that's what friends are for.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah.
Sally McMullen
I completely back this.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah.
Sally McMullen
Because I'm the same. I can never do it while I'm out but I will do it when I get home. Because there is a reason why they say it's better out and than in.
Alex Hourigan
Oh, yeah.
Sally McMullen
And when you are sick on a night out, it is so much more painful the next day, because you're sober.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah.
Sally McMullen
You can feel everything, the headaches set in, and also it's just been churning in your stomach. Awful. So, the tactical vom, I would say is an absolute fact.
Alex Hourigan
Fact on fact. Don't encourage you to just go vomiting everywhere in any way or drink to the point that you need to vomit. But if you need to be sick, be sick.
Sally McMullen
Absolutely. Alright, let's do a quick fire and rank our hangover hacks.
Alex Hourigan
Okay.
Sally McMullen
And cures.
Alex Hourigan
Okay.
Sally McMullen
So I would say that from worst to best, is the Claratyne. Didn't work, do not do it. Stick with your Nurofen and Panadol. Then I would personally say that then the next one is the ice water challenge. Would you agree?
Alex Hourigan
Yes.
Sally McMullen
It makes you feel more refreshed but I still felt sick afterwards, bascially.
Alex Hourigan
I agree.
Sally McMullen
Then I would say that the next one is the tac vom, I think, and then the best one is the greasy food the next day.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah, if I was gonna counter that,
Sally McMullen
Devil's advocate.
Alex Hourigan
Devil's advocate. So worst to best hangover cures would be Claratyne before bed. Then up from that would be dipping your face in an ice bucket of cold water. Kind of just reminded me of the ice bucket challenge and took me back to like 2014.
Sally McMullen
Fully, me too!
Alex Hourigan
Like this is terrifying. Next one I would say is a tac vom because I hate vomiting but it does work but, traumatising. Then Maccas, but the number one is a baptismal cleanse in the ocean, if you can go for a swim, just go do that because I promise you the sunshine, the ocean, it'll fix it. Also, Maccas is a very, very close second to that.
Sally McMullen
If you can have Maccas and then go for a swim. You've nailed it.
Alex Hourigan
If you can have Maccas in the ocean, while vomiting, after dipping your face in ice cold water, and taken a Claratyne the night before, you're winning.
Sally McMullen
Oh yeah. That's a wrap for another episode of Fact or Cap, we hope you enjoyed. Remember, drink responsibly. If you are feeling very sick the next day, seek the help of a medical professional, not us, but these are the things that have worked for us.
Alex Hourigan
Disclaimer.
Sally McMullen
Yeah, that either have or haven't worked for us. So take them with a grain of salt of course. We'll make sure to pop a bunch of links to the TikToks if you want to see them for reference, try them out, or if you just want to laugh at people basically drowning themselves in ice water. Always fun. We'll pop those in the show notes for a transcript. Sorry, I just broke Al. For a transcript of today's episode, head to finder.com.au/twobrokechicks. Thank you to our executive producer Pariya Taherzadeh, and Bamby Media for editing today's episode. And thank you to you for having us in your earholes, we love to be here. I'm a psychopath.
Alex Hourigan
Cheers, chicks!
Sally McMullen
Cheers! See you at Frankie's!
Alex Hourigan
See you at Frankie's.
