And this is Two Broke Chicks, a show that shares life lessons for the gals, from the gals. And this is our fabulous mini ep called Fact or Cap. If this is the first time you're listening to this episode, what Fact or Cap is, is Sal and I try a fad, or a challenge, or something that we've seen around the town, on the internet and see whether it's the vibe or not, hence, Fact or Cap. And today's episode is the 12-3-30 challenge. If you haven't heard of this, here's a little context. The 12-3-30 challenge is a treadmill exercise that basically, and is supposed to, transform your entire body. What you do is you get on a treadmill, and you put the incline up to 12, for 30 minutes, on speed three, and die. Spoiler. And basically, it's supposed to give you abs, a booty and you're supposed to, you know, shed some extra, you know, weight here and there, but.

It's supposed to, like, tone you up all round.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah, yeah. And, like, burns heaps of calories while you're doing it. So we did it. For context, Sal's good with exercising, I hate it. I actually want to go into a dark pit whenever I go into the gym. But basically, we did it for four weeks and here's whether or not it's the vibe.

This exercise, you're apparently supposed to do it like five times a week. I was doing it maybe three, four on a really good week. And-
Alex Hourigan
I just found it really boring and when we went into the challenge, we were going to do it literally every day.
Sally McMullen
Yeah.
Alex Hourigan
And I think I did it three times a week, same as you. Like, I was like, this is just such a boring thing to just walk on a treadmill. However, I realised, we're doing it wrong. 12-3-30, the three is in miles, not kilometres per hour. So when I started, I'd seen everyone being like, I've never sweat so much in my life. And I was like, "Yeah, let's go", and was doing it on three speed. Not realising who started this challenge was from America and that's in miles. So when I changed it to 4.8, sis nearly fell off the bloody treadmill. I was like, oh my gosh, it was so much harder. And I didn't want to do it anymore.

I realised that halfway through this challenge as well. And what I will say is that if you're not into exercise, I actually do think that this is a really good challenge to just get yourself in there. Because as somebody who doesn't enjoy exercise either, doing a HIIT class, or doing a boxing class, or something that's really high intensity, it can be really easy to lose motivation and just give up. Whereas with this challenge I found, because it's more like the length that you're doing it. By the end, you are sweating, you're sore the next day, you can feel it. But the actual activity of walking on a treadmill isn't that hard and you can do it.

It's not hard but you're left alone with your thoughts for so long. That was the problem for me that I was like, I was left alone with my thoughts for so long that I'm like, "Ah, this is hard. I'm walking up a hill for 30 minutes. I don't want to do this anymore. This is boring". Whereas with a HIIT class, it's so fast paced, it's so intense, someone's yelling at me. I don't have enough time to think about how much I hate being there.

Yeah, totally.

Basically.

I think if you're gonna fall into that camp, try it, but listen to a podcast, or an audiobook or, like, queue up an episode of a show and watch that to try and keep your mind off it. I found that I enjoyed this challenge the most when I would listen to a podcast and then I would follow it with like a 20 minute floor workout and mix it up.

Mmm, I thought of doing that.
Sally McMullen
Yeah, and I also saw better results. I will admit that I did see, I wasn't tracking, like, kilos or anything like that. But I did see a difference in the tone in my legs and it's supposed to increase, like, your cardiovascular bing bang bong, whatever. And I did find that the more that I did it, I was getting less puffed out, I was feeling more energised, I was sleeping better. So I do think that this challenge works.

I don't think it gives the results that is made out on TikTok

I agree. I didn't have abs, my legs were looking fab. But anything else.
Alex Hourigan
They always look fab, babygirl.

Thanks, girl! But I think you need a more well rounded workout if you want those results.

Yeah, I think it did what exercising does when I worked out for half an hour a day.
Sally McMullen

I think, you know, lost a bit of weight and felt healthier, felt fitter. Did I come out looking like Jessica Alba in Into the Blue? No. Was that the goal? Yes.
Sally McMullen
I was going for Jessica Alba in Sin City, but we both, you know, similar.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah. Vibes. Vibes on vibes. I think, kind of like what you said, if you're wanting to get back into the gym or if you wanted to do something, it's a good warm up. I started enjoying doing it for 20 minutes and then, as you said, would go into a different warm up. However, I think I prefer just going for a walk outside. And if I go, I've got an Apple Watch. Rich. Rich!

She's rich, she's fit.
Alex Hourigan
Rich! Didn't even buy it, it was a present from my parents at Christmas.

Details, details.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah, it's called Two Broke Chicks still. Like, I didn't buy it. But I burn the same amount of calories going for an hour walk outside than I did on the 12-3-30.

It's a cap. It's a cap, it's a fad, it's a TikTok fad. Like, honestly, those who love it. I'm sure they love it and it works for them. For me, it is a cap. I would much rather be assaulted by a HIIT class, or listen to my audio book with some fantasy novel that I'm into that day, and go for an hour walk in the sunshine and outside than sweaty, treadmill gym where I'm intimidated by every good looking person there that's 10 times fitter than me.
