League of Legends in esports: Everything you need to know

lol (1)

The MOBA that started it all – how League of Legends in esports works.

Riot’s fast-paced, competitive RTS online battle arena League of Legends (LoL) pits two teams of powerful champions head to head on an open battlefield. Five players on each side use gold and experience points to overcome the other team and claim the main objective. The objective can alternate depending on modes but generally a team must reach the enemy's base and destroy it. The first team to fulfil the map’s objective wins.

The players

A team consists of five players with varying roles depending on their character or hero choices. Some roles involve killing enemy players, minions or NPC monsters on the map. Each player contributes to the team’s overall power and ability to move towards the objective.

A top team will generally contain a few players who are able to adapt to the moment and change roles on the fly.

Tournaments

League of Legends tournaments are held year round, with the international World Championship taking place across multiple countries and months. The World Championship begins in September and concludes in November with the grand finals, where two teams go head to head for a share of the prize pool of US$4.5 million. This is one of the biggest prize pools in esports and competitive tournaments so far.

Aside from the annual World Championship event, tournaments are held throughout the year, with two to four main tournaments every 12 months. Charity events and friendly matches are occasionally held and usually announced through social media.
