Epson's new EcoTank printers promise to be good for your wallet and the environment – here's what you need to know.

If you're looking to upgrade your home printer, you need to know about the new models from Epson. The brand has just launched two new heat-free EcoTank multi-function printers specifically designed for high-productivity home offices.

The EcoTank Pro ET-5150 and EcoTank Pro ET-5170 are available from today, and they're looking like the perfect replacement for messy, expensive and heat-producing laser printers.

As with previous models in the EcoTank range, they dispense with traditional ink cartridges. Instead, they come with extra-large ink tanks that provide up to two years' worth of printing (or approximately 5,200 colour pages) before you need to replace the tank.

Replacement ink bottles are also reasonably priced, with an RRP of $24.99. This compares favourably to traditional colour ink cartridges which can cost between $25 and $50 a pop, depending on the model.

Here are a few of the key features and benefits you need to know about:

  • Heat-free technology means you're using less power than a standard laser printer.
  • Cartridge free printing with easy-to-fill, supersized ink tanks.
  • Cost of replacement ink works out to less than two cents per page.
  • Easy wireless printing from smartphones and tablets via Wi-Fi Direct.
  • Two-year warranty with product registration.

Here's how the two models compare:
