E3 2016 vs 2015: 20% drop in games from major publishers

The numbers are in. E3 2016 had an overall 20% drop in games showcased and nearly half as many new IPs showcased by major publishers.

Numbers. Love 'em or hate 'em, you can't ignore them. We've compared the titles showcased by major publishers at last year's E3 against E3 2016 and have discovered some fascinating differences.

After recently discovering that 62% of last year's E3 showings were yet to be released, we thought it timely to grill the title list emerging from E3 2016 in a similar manner.

It goes without saying that this year's E3 had its ups and downs. Sony stayed strong in the public eye by bringing the goods to the show floor with Kojima Productions' suitably insane debut and not one but three Crash Bandicoot remasters, whereas Bethesda left viewers wanting more after a strong presence last year. So it comes as no surprise that Bethesda showed up with nearly half as many games this year as they did last year, and even less of a surprise that Sony was the only publisher match the amount of games shown on stage last year.

E3 by the numbers: Our key takeaways

  • There was an overall 20% drop in games on stage at E3 2016 when compared to 2015
  • There were nearly half as many new IPs represented on stage in 2016 than there were in 2015
  • However, there were more new IPs revealed on stage this year. 4 in 2015 and 5 in 2016.
  • There were also more overall reveals this year than there were last year. 23 games were revealed for the first time in 2015 and 27 in 2016.
  • Sony was the only major publisher to match the amount of games shown on stage in 2016 with 14 in 2015 and 14 in 2016.
  • Bethesda fared the worst. It showcased the least games out of any major publisher and halved its showings from 2015.
  • EA also halved its showing this year. EA showcased 12 games in 2016 and only 6 in 2016.
  • 80% of games shown in 2016 were sequels, spin-offs or reboots.
