Eight games in (not counting the many, many Warriors spin-offs), the Dynasty Warriors series has gotten a little long in the tooth for many players. Fortunately, developer Omega Force has realised this and stepped up its efforts with its latest entry, Dynasty Warriors 9.
For the first time, the frenetic hack-and-slash series is going open-world. Players can freely explore a condensed version of China, riding horses between towns and piloting boats across historical landmarks like the Yellow River.
The open-world approach adds variety to the combat, too. Using the game's new grappling hook, you can climb up normally impenetrable walls to get the height advantage on your opponents. Flammable barrels and bodies of water add even more tactical opportunities to the battles.
When you get tired of all the fighting, side activities like hunting monsters, crafting weapons and fishing provide a welcome breath of fresh air.
