Diners Club Complimentary Insurance Cover

Learn about the protection you receive on items paid for using your Diners Club card.

We all know that unexpected things can happen, and can happen at any time. The important thing to know is that the items you pay for using your card may be covered with many credit and charge cards, using their complimentary insurance policies.

One of the card providers who provide complimentary insurances on some of their products is Diners Club, so you should take the time to understand all of the terms and conditions of your credit or charge card cover. Once you know what they are then you can have all the assurance you’ll need if you ever need to submit a claim.

Read on to learn about the Extended Warranty, Guaranteed Pricing Scheme and Purchase Cover Insurance offered with some Diners Club cards, and also the terms and restrictions associated with these covers.

Terms and conditions apply universally

When you understand the terms and conditions of an agreement then you can feel confident if and when your time of need arises. But, if you don’t know what those terms are then you might be at a loss. Your cover requires that you comply with all obligations that are contained in your cover information terms and conditions. Failure to comply with these obligations may result in the insurance provider refusing to pay your claim.

It’s not required that you inform Diners Club about your travel arrangements in regards to travel insurance. If you’re in compliance with the detailed terms and conditions then you will receive automatic coverage.

Terms defined

Outlined in the information may be some terms with which you’re unfamiliar with, so we’ve explained them for you below.

Covered breakdown: This refers to a covered product that has failed in some way. For example, it’s not able to function in the way that it was designed or is defective. This coverage does not include items that would otherwise be covered by the registered warranty.

Covered product: This refers to a product that was purchased to be used personally. It could be a personal or household product but will exclude the following:

  • products that are intended to be re-sold
  • items related to your business
  • animals, plants or plant life
  • computer software or intangible products
  • cash, gold, vouchers, gift cards, negotiable products, tickets of any sort, travellers' cheques or stamp, coin and card collections
  • items that are consumed such as drinks, foods, drugs, or cosmetics
  • cars, motor boats, motorcycles, aircraft or any type of motorised vehicles
  • second-hand items
  • contraband
  • real estate and home fixtures and fittings which includes dishwashers, stoves, etc.
  • any item that exceeds $10,000 (for Purchase Cover Insurance) or $20,000 for Extended Warranty Insurance.

Registered warranty: This refers to a warranty provided by the manufacturer. It’s a written warranty that is registered with the manufacturer. It’s applicable throughout Australia.

Unattended: This refers to when an item is able to be taken without you being able to prevent it from happening.

Responsibility and minimising losses

It’s your responsibility as a cardholder to take all the steps within reason to minimise loss. You are required to take precautions to protect your personal items and belongings. For example, if your item is left unattended in a public area and as a result has been stolen this is considered as not taking reasonable precautions.

If there are warnings that have been broadcast through news outlets then it’s your responsibility to heed those warnings.

Items that are excluded from coverage

This section is important so as to assure you are aware of which items are not accepted for coverage.

  • Items that you have left in a public place. It does not matter whether or not they were left behind or misplaced.
  • Items left in a motor vehicle. The exception to this are items that were properly stored in the boot of the vehicle but were forcibly retrieved.
  • Items left overnight in or on a motor vehicle.
  • Items left with a person or persons who steal or damage your property.
  • Jewellery, mobile phones, watches, cameras or other portable electronic items such as computers that are left unattended at any time or left inside of a motor vehicle even if it is locked in the boot or placed in your baggage.
  • Stamps, securities, account books or manuscripts that include art or antiques.
  • Sporting equipment.
  • Any item(s) that is originally intended to be sold or traded. This includes any business items.
  • Items that are considered to be fragile or easily broken unless the damage occurred is due to thieves or fire. Photographic and video equipment are not considered to be fragile.
  • Items that you would otherwise send by post or have transported and that are not included as part of your baggage that accompanies you.
  • Any items that are confiscated or destroyed by customs officials or any other authorities.
  • Items that have disappeared without any reasonable explanation.
  • Loss due to changes in the rates of currency.
  • Items lost due to failure to take reasonable precautions.
  • Items lost due to an act of terrorism.
  • Items damaged or lost due to war, invasion, an act of a foreign entity, hostile forces, civil war, riots, acts of rebellion, revolution, military coup or actual overthrow or even just an attempted overthrow of a governmental regime.
  • Items that are damaged or lost due to regular wear and tear. This can be due to changes in weather and climate, flood, mould, mildew and animal interaction. This also includes insects, vermin and rodents. This also includes damage done by cleaning, ironing, washing or drying the item.
  • Items lost or damaged due to radioactivity or nuclear damage.
  • Items lost or damaged due to the use of pathogenic or poisonous materials.

What is Purchase Cover Insurance?

Purchase Cover Insurance gives you coverage for any theft, damage or loss to items that are covered. These items must have been purchased on your account.

This coverage is available to all cardholders for items listed under "covered products". These items can have been purchased any place or given to you as a gift (and you are a permanent Australian resident). The only stipulation is that the entire purchase must be charged to the cardholder’s account.

How long is coverage available?

Coverage is available to you for 90 days from the time the covered product was purchased.

What exactly is covered?

Coverage includes covered products that have been stolen, lost or damaged anywhere in the world. You must submit a claim with 21 days of having the item lost, stolen or damaged.

What are the limits?

You’ll receive the lesser amount of either the amount that was charged on the account or $3,000. There is a maximum amount of $125,000 that will be paid in a 12 month period.

Guaranteed Pricing Scheme

The Guaranteed Pricing Scheme will reimburse you when you find an item someplace else for a lower price. The amount you can receive is up to $500. The program is available to all cardholders and is only eligible for products and items that are purchased on the cardholders’ account. You’re only eligible to submit for it if you have purchased a covered product and the price difference that is found elsewhere is more than $75.

You are given the difference in the price up to $500. Here are some additional stipulations:

  • The item that is the cheaper of the covered product must be new. It must also be the same model, year and manufacturer as the covered product that was originally purchased.
  • The item that is cheaper must be available from a retailer that is within a 25 kilometre radius of the one in which the original was purchased.
  • You must make a claim on the item within 60 days of purchase and within that time be able to show the advertising for the other cheaper product.

What are the limits?

You cannot be covered on purchases made or advertised on the internet.

Extended Warranty Insurance

Extended warranty insurance is additional coverage for an item to be repaired or replaced. This applies only to items purchased on your account.

This coverage is available to all cardholders. Warranty insurance, however, cannot be transferred.

You are covered when:

  • You take reasonable measures to protect your covered product
  • You receive prior approval before commencing repairs.
  • Retain the covered products or parts relevant to the item. Diners Club must inspect them first.

You receive extended warranty insurance from the time that your registered warranty ends. It’s available for the same time period in which the registered warranty was granted. There is a maximum of 12 months. If your registered warranty is more than five years then you are not eligible for extended warranty insurance. See below for how this works:

If your card provides these services it could save you thousands over the course of a number of years, so know the terms and conditions for these services intimately, and be confident when you need to make a claim.

You will receive a maximum of $20,000 within any 12 month period.

Submitting a claim

Below are the steps you’ll need to follow in the event you need to lodge a claim:

1. Contact Zurich, not Diners Club.

Your claim is through Zurich and they’ll process your claims. If you’re overseas and need to submit a claim then you must call 1800 648 093 within 30 days of the loss or damage of the item. If you’re overseas, this contact number will change to +61 2 9995 2021. If you do not make contact within this timeframe then you may not receive any payment on your claim.

2. Report lost, stolen or damaged items.

If any of your items have been lost or stolen, you must report the incident within 24 hours. This means first contact the police and then Zurich Australian Insurance. You must receive a copy of the report made by the police which you will need to submit to Zurich Australian Insurance.

3. Zurich Australia must receive all necessary documentation.

This includes:

  • reports from authorities
  • certified translations
  • the items that were damaged
  • receipts
  • proof you own the product
  • valuations
  • quotations
  • advertisement from a store or catalogue
  • the registered warranty

Failure to submit the preceding items could result in a failure to pay the claim.

4. Assist with the claims process.

There are circumstances when other individuals may be sued in your name to recover money or damages to an item or product. If this happens then you are required to assist Zurich in the most honest and truthful manner possible. You must reveal any other insurance you might have and you may not claim from Zurich and another insurer an amount that overcompensates your loss.

5. Repair or replace damaged items.

If your item is lost or stolen or damaged then Zurich may resort to repairing the item or pay you to have it replaced. If the item is part of a set then you’ll only get the value of the item that was lost, stolen or damaged and not the whole set. You will not receive more than you paid initially for the item.
