Who can change my money in Newcastle?
Travelex has its own locations near the water on Market Street, in Kotara Westfield and in Charlestown Square shopping centre. All are open from at least 9am to 5pm on weekdays, while the Kotara and Charlestown stores stay open later on Thursdays and are also open on Saturday and Sunday. Its Market Street location is closed on Sundays though.
Greater Bank's many branches in Newcastle also offer currency exchange via Travelex.
2. Travel Money Oz
This service has two locations near Newcastle, in Kotara and Charlestown South. Both are open seven days per week, keeping normal business hours on most weekdays and not staying open as long on weekends.
Its stores let you exchange cash, often within 2.5% of mid-market rates (although rates are poorer for converting to travel money cards). You can find out more about Travel Money Oz in our full review.
3. Cash Stop
The Cash Stop in Mayfield on Maitland Road also offers foreign currency exchange services, as well as loans. It's available during business hours from Monday to Friday.
It claims to not have any commissions or fees, but it might still have less-competitive rates than other options, so make sure you check the exchange rates ahead of time.
Tips for getting the best deal when exchanging money
- Watch out for hidden fees. Fees can take different forms. Make sure you're aware of all the additional expenses involved in an exchange by asking for all the fees upfront. Combine these fees with the exchange rates to get a sense of how much extra you're actually paying
- Check the current exchange rates. Do a fresh check of the mid-market exchange rates on the day of the transaction, for an up-to-date benchmark. This lets you calculate the margin on each exchange service.
- Shop around. It can pay to shop around, especially if you're on the verge of going to a money exchanger in an airport or a high-traffic tourist area.
- Consider other ways of exchanging funds. There are a lot of travel money options, including buying currency ahead of time, bank drafts, specialised travel money cards and more. Planning ahead can save money.
