Where can I change my money in the Gold Coast?
1. Travel Money Oz
Travel Money Oz has a good set of currency exchanges in the Gold Coast between Coomera and Robina.
It doesn't have any right in the centre of town and the closest one to Surfers Paradise is the one in Robina, but you'll also find one next to Helensvale station and one in Moondarewa. All of them are open seven days a week. There are lots of options close together in Robina which can make it easier to compare prices if you're in the area.
You can also just compare rates online and order your currency through the Travel Money Oz website for pick-up at the branch of your choice.
You'll find a Travelex at Gold Coast Airport but will likely find better rates if you wait to change your money at a Travelex in Broadbeach, Robina or at the Helensvale Westfield.
Its stores are open seven days a week, but only during normal business hours. Its ATMs at the airport naturally don't have any set hours though. Beyond just changing currency, Travelex has a wide range of other travel money options, including prepaid cards and more. You'll find the most variety and options in Robina.
You'll get the same options online though, as well as better rates from Travelex when ordering currency online for an in-store pick-up.
3. Unimoni Australia
Unimoni is probably best known as a money transfer service, but in tourist destinations like the Gold Coast it's also a currency exchange spot.
If you're looking for a currency exchange right in the middle of everything, there's a Unimoni exchange at Centre Arcade in Surfers Paradise. Otherwise, you can visit the one in Robina. Both are closed on Sundays though.
Currency exchanges have the most competition in Robina, which could help you compare rates and find the best deal more easily.
Tips for getting the best deal when exchanging money
All over the world, the same tips will often hold true to help you get better rates.
- Avoid airport exchanges. Airport currency exchanges will often have worse rates than others.
- Beware of ATM fees. ATMs can be convenient for directly withdrawing money in local currency, but they're also prone to taking a big bite out of your savings with high fees and poor rates.
- Check the mid-market rates. Knowing the official mid-market currency exchange rates is important to be able to see exactly how much you're paying in margins.
- Ask about fees upfront. Ask what fees will apply upfront. This way you can avoid unpleasant surprises like the multiple hidden fees that some exchangers apply.
- Prepare ahead of time. Generally, using a currency exchange in your destination won't ever be the most cost-effective option. It's much easier to get the most affordable option before leaving. You can even just buy cash for home delivery before you go.
Compare money transfer services
Sending money is often more cost-effective than currency conversions alone and you can sometimes find low fees plus rates well within 1% of the mid-market.
Just enter your currency and amount into the calculator below to see how much a money transfer with each provider might cost.
The "Rate" and "Amount Received" displayed are indicative rates that have been supplied by each brand or gathered by Finder.
Exchange rates are volatile and change often. As a result, the exchange rate listed on Finder may vary to the actual exchange rate quoted for the brand. Please confirm the actual exchange rate and mention "Finder" before you commit to a brand.
