Winter skin, be gone! Cream E45 is a household essential.

Why we love this product

When dealing with problematic skin, sometimes going back to basics is best. E45 is a brand relatively new to the Australian market and you could almost consider "back to basics" as a sort of mantra for the brand. It's simple, uncomplicated skincare.

One of the most loved skincare brands in the UK, E45 is a dermatological brand. Its products have been specifically formulated for dry skin and conditions exacerbated by dry skin, like eczema. The range available in Australia includes a body wash and a light moisturising cream, but the stand-out product is the brand's signature cream called Cream E45.

The quick verdict

Why is it good? It's a simple and cheap cream that cures dry skin

How much is it? $11 for 125g

Where can you buy it? Chemist Warehouse and eBay

I've been using Cream E45 for a few weeks now and in my opinion, every household in Australia needs a tub of this in their cupboard. This rich and soothing cream is a simple solution to so many ailments. Plus, it's fragrance-free and appropriate for skin of all ages.

So, why is it so good? This is a brand that focuses on keeping the skin's barrier in tip-top condition. And a healthy skin barrier is the secret to healthy skin. The top layer of your skin has holes, and these holes are filled with natural oils (like ceramides and other lipids). These act like a plug, keeping water in and keeping irritants and bacteria that are present in the air out. So, when your natural oils are depleted and your skin is dry, this opens you up to a whole host of bad conditions and nasties.

Winter is a particularly bad time for dry skin and what can make it worse are long hot showers. Hot water melts the natural oils in your skin and the shower pressure washes them away. This leaves your skin open, susceptible, dry, scaly and can exacerbate eczema. Not good.

This is where E45 comes in. This skincare brand isn't fussed with anti-ageing promises. It's not collagen-boosting or exfoliating. It doesn't promise radiance or vibrancy. What it does do is nourish your skin and help put some of those fats and natural oils back in, essentially plugging all of those holes back up. It contains wool fat, light liquid paraffin and white soft paraffin. And these ingredients have the heavy moisturising properties necessary to intensely nourish, fill skin holes and maintain and improve the condition of your skin.

While my oily skin is not normally prone to dryness, my dear love of sitting in front of heaters and scalding hot showers during winter takes a huge toll. My legs suffer the most. My calves sometimes look more like they're covered in scales than skin. But using E45 has lead to some drastic improvements. My legs look like legs again!

The product is so effective that I don't even have to use it every day. I use it every second or third day. The pretty, rose-scented moisturisers I'd been using previously (which weren't cheap, by the way) had to be used daily, and even then, they never completely removed that itchy dry feeling. E45 blows everything else I've tried out of the water and it's only $11 for a tub. I've even put my partner onto it too. He's an eczema sufferer who now loves this cream as much as me.

Cream E45 is now a bedside table mainstay for me. Any time I feel scratchy or tight, this is an almost instantaneous solution. And it's one that can be used by the whole family. Seriously, go get yourself a tub.

Affordability

This one is just 11 bucks. You can get bigger tubs too. They cost more but are cheaper per 100g. It's insanely affordable for what it does.

Where to buy?

Cream E45 is available at major supermarket and also from Chemist Warehouse and eBay.
