Omicron is the latest strain of the COVID-19 virus to hit Darwin. With daily case numbers in the Northern Territory now over 400, what are your options if you need to get tested?

Option #1: Rapid antigen tests

If you need your results as quickly as possible, a rapid antigen test (RAT) is definitely your best option. These kits can be used at home without a medical professional and do not require you to send the test to a lab. Results typically take under 30 minutes.

The downside of rapid antigen tests is twofold: they are less accurate than a PCR test and they cannot be used as proof of a negative test result for international travel.

If you record a positive RAT test, it is important you report it to the Northern Territory's Department of Health. RAT tests are now being reported as part of the daily case numbers recorded in NT, leading to a significant increase in positive numbers.

Positive tests can be recorded online via the government website. You must also isolate for 7 days.

Rapid antigen tests vary in price, with a pack of 5 typically costing from $50 to around $100. A surge in demand also means that finding kits in-store or online is challenging. We're regularly monitoring stock levels in our guide on where to buy COVID home test kits. Some rapid antigen tests are also being offered for free to concession and health cardholders.

Be careful! Things to check with rapid antigen tests

We're checking availability for RAT testing kits regularly but delivery times are subject to change. All tests sold in Australia must be approved by the TGA. Some sellers try and charge prices far above the average ("price gouging"). This isn't legal in Australia. Always consider your options carefully before buying.

Am I required to register a RAT result in Darwin?

If you take a RAT and it diagnoses you as a positive case, you're required by law to report your result in NT and are considered an official COVID-19 case.

You can do this by completing this online form or phoning the coronavirus hotline on 1800 675 398.

Option #2: Get a free test

The NT government currently provides free PCR tests at COVID-19 testing clinics throughout the state. Under current rules, only people advised to take a test by health officials or showing symptoms of COVID-19 are eligible for testing.

Wait times can be quite lengthy and you may be indirectly exposed to the virus while lining up. A free PCR test cannot be used for international travel. Instead, you will need to pay for a test from a private clinic up to 72 hours before you fly.

Option #3: PCR tests for travel

If you're planning to leave NT for an overseas trip this year, you will need to prove you are COVID-free and safe to travel.

Most countries require you to take a PCR test prior to departure as well as being fully vaccinated. Failure to show a COVID-19 Travel Certificate could result in the airline refusing to board you.

Fortunately, it's not too difficult to book an RT-PCR test and get your certification for as little as $100. You can arrange a test from a number of clinics around NT up to 72 hours before you fly. The amount you pay will depend on the clinic and how quickly you need the results.

You can find a list of clinic locations where you can book a test and receive your COVID-19 Travel Certificate below.

PCR tests in Darwin

COVID-19 testing for pre-departure international travel clearance is only available at private pathology collection centres. This means you cannot rely on a free test from a COVID-19 testing clinic. Instead, you will need to pay a fee for a COVID-19 Travel Certificate.

The amount you pay will depend on the clinic and how quickly you need the results. You can find a list of clinic locations and compare prices in the table above.

How to book a PCR test before arriving at the airport

A number of private clinics provide RT-PCR tests for travel from collection centre locations around NT. Clinics operating in Darwin and wider NT include Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology, Australian Clinical Labs and Western Diagnostic Pathology.

To book a test, simply head to the website of your preferred (or most local) testing provider and follow the relevant appointment booking instructions outlined. Many of the testing locations don't actually require an appointment and offer services on a walk-in basis.

How much do COVID tests for travel cost?

On average, COVID tests range in price between $150 and $300. Fast turnaround times typically come at a premium. As an incentive to travel, some holiday companies offer testing as part of their package. Some airports have drive-through and walk-in PCR test centres but unfortunately, Darwin Airport does not.

Option #4: Bulk buy and professional COVID tests for Darwin businesses

For businesses looking to create a safe working environment there are multiple suppliers that sell large quantities of rapid antigen tests to businesses in the table below. However, if your business requires COVID tests that need to be administered by a health professional, see our where to buy professional COVID tests guide.
