What should I know about flying to Costa Rica?

  • As Costa Rica is still a relatively emerging destination, there is not a huge amount of flight choice from Australia. Flight deals are most likely to be found in winter (May-November). This is rainy season but temperatures are still pleasant. Everything is cheaper during this period although some hotels shut during September and October.
  • Flying with multiple airlines is often a cheaper way of getting to Costa Rica. You can find route options on websites like Skyscanner. Where possible make sure to book your flights from Australia to Costa Rica on the same ticket/transaction. This way if you miss a connection due to delays the airline should simply put you on the next flight.
  • Most flights from Australia transit via Los Angeles International airport (LAX) and some again in Atlanta. Delta Airlines flies to LAX direct from Sydney and Melbourne. Connecting flights to Costa Rica from Melbourne involve long wait times due to the way they coincide. If travelling from Melbourne it could be worth spending a night in LA. Alternatively you could actually save a couple of hundred dollars per person by booking return flights to LA and separate return flights from LA to Costa Rica. You would just need to make very sure that there’s enough time for transiting through LAX as queues for customs and baggage can be very long.

How do I get around from the main airport in San Jose (SJO)?

Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) is 17km from the capital and public bus is the cheapest way of getting there. If you aren’t staying in the city you can take a taxi from there onwards. Red taxis with a yellow triangle are regulated by the government and operate on set fares.

Scheduled shuttle services run to and from popular destinations and hotels across Costa Rica. They are reasonably priced and reliable. Many have websites and they can and should be booked in advance. If you are travelling in a group then an option is to hire a private driver – they will often act as a guide on your journey too and give you some key insights and information. Car rental is available from the airport and is the most convenient way of exploring the country. In-depth information about different transport methods can be found on the official tourism website visitcostarica.com.

You can fly to other parts of Central and South America with local airlines like Avianca and Copa Airlines. Nature Air is a Costa Rican airline which offers flights to neighbouring Panama and Nicaragua as well as internal routes.
