Understanding store return policies in Australia is a bit of a minefield. The only legislated policy around returns regards returning items that are faulty or not as advertised. Every retailer in Australia has to comply with the laws around consumer guarantees - which you can read more about in our everything you need to know about returns in Australia guide. But what about returns where you've just changed your mind?

Well, there is no law that says stores need to accept "change of mind" returns and there is no law that says if a retailer does accept your return that they need to give you your cash back rather than store credit. With this in mind, retailers can call most of the shots when it comes to returns and it's up to us, the consumers, to know what the return policies are in order to avoid challenging return situations later on.

We've rounded up a list of some of the top online retailers and have compared the return policies so you can see where you can shop hassle free.

Note, that we've only compared the policies in regards to "change of mind" returns. For faulty items you are covered under the consumer guarantee laws and all stores have to refund, repair or replace you item free of charge regardless of the time frame - this doesn't count if you've misused the product.
