What is the City2Surf?
The City2Surf is an annual running event that’s held annually in Sydney. The race was started in 1971 by the staff of The Sun and attracted just over 2,000 competitors, a stark contrast to the 80,000 plus that have shown up to compete in recent years.
The race covers 14 kilometres, and, true to its name, starts in Sydney’s CBD and heads east until it hits Bondi Beach. A notable part of the course is ‘Heartbreak Hill’, which is a 2km stretch of New South Head Road that sees runners make their way through Rose Bay and into Vaucluse. This also marks the halfway point of the race.

Keeping your belongings secure
Your entry fee to the City2Surf includes gear transport from the starting line to the finish line. If you’d like your gear carried to the finish line, you’ll need to arrive well before 7:20am, as this is when the last gear truck will leave. It’s recommended you only leave jackets, a change of clothes, a post-race snack and a water bottle, as personal bags or valuables will not be accepted. Here are the gear-drop locations for each group:
- Red – Archibald Fountain
- Gold – Outside Hyde Park Barracks
- Green – St James Station
- Blue – Corner of Liverpool and College streets
- Yellow – Outside Hyde Park Barracks
- Orange – There is no gear service, and entrants are encouraged to carry their gear with them during the race.
So whether you’re looking to beat the 40:03 record, or are just happy to laugh with your friends as you struggle together up Heartbreak Hill, make sure you’re prepared for the 2015 City2Surf.
