Naughty Dog discusses how Chloe was chosen to lead The Lost Legacy

Uncharted's resident Aussie takes the reins.

Almost as soon as Uncharted 4: A Thief's End dropped, there was talk about which character would headline the eventual story that DLC began. Considering Uncharted 4's closing moments, many assumed that the roles would land in the laps of Sam Drake and Victor "Sully" Sullivan, who we last left on the verge of a new and exciting partnership.

However, everyone and anyone who played Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception knew that there was only one answer to that question: Chloe. Bloody. Frazer.

Admittedly, the obvious team-up for most would have been the classic Chloe + Charlie Cutter combo, but when Uncharted: The Lost Legacy for PlayStation 4 was first revealed at PSX 2016, we were pleasantly surprised to find out that Uncharted 4's PMC leader Nadine Ross would take the role of Chloe's partner in crime.

Chloe's humour, swagger and morally checkered history make her the obvious candidate in the eyes of anyone whose ears have been blessed by Claudia Black's masterful voice work. However, we were curious as to how exactly Naughty Dog decided to hand the reins over to Chloe. We asked senior communications manager Scott Lowe.

"Fan affinity and Chloe's absence [from Uncharted 4: A Thief's End]" were definitely factors, Lowe confirmed. But that wasn't the primary reason. Chloe's "enigmatic" aura and mysterious past hugely influenced the choice. In Naughty Dog's eyes, Chloe had the most narrative potential because the Uncharted series had covered a such a small portion of the savvy swashbuckler's personal history, yet had still managed to create a relatable and lovable character.

Despite expectations (and the vocal few), "Chloe was instantaneously the front runner, but we considered all options," said Lowe. He acknowledged that a lot of people expected a Sam and Sully story once Uncharted 4 wrapped. To that, Lowe says that Naughty Dog considered the option but decided in the end that Sully, though loved dearly by the folks at Naughty Dog, was already "pretty well established".

Over four Uncharted games, Sully had already become this "larger than life" character, Lowe says. We know that despite some early confusion, Sully is a loyal and pure ally. We know how Sully and Drake met and a little about his early days as a roguish, moustachioed thief and mentor. We know about his romantic history with the villainous Katherine Marlowe and his dishonourable discharge from the Navy. Lowe says that this rich history would potentially make a standalone Sully story "unwieldy" as they would have to find a gap in Sully's already-dense history. Chloe's mysterious past, on the other hand, allows for a "self-contained beginning, middle and end".

To finish, Lowe brings it back to Chloe's magnetic personality. "Chloe's also just a lot of fun, you know? She's got this great sense of humour that she uses as a defence mechanism in a way, cutting through the tension. She tries to evade people and avoid letting them in."

After spending roughly 45 minutes exploring The Lost Legacy's Western Ghats with Chloe and Nadine for company, we couldn't agree more. Claudia Black's performance and Naughty Dog's knack for storytelling are a match made in Shambhala and the pair together is a powerful force to be reckoned with.

We'll elaborate more on Chloe and Nadine's intriguing relationship in our upcoming hands-on trial.
