The soaring Andes may be the backbone to this South American nation, but all along the narrow nation you'll find wonders like the Atacama Desert, filled with colourful sands and llamas, the colourful seaside city of Valparaiso, home to some of the world's best street art, and the beautifully remote Patagonia region - the gateway to Antarctica and home to some of the world's largest glaciers.

And all this is so much more affordable than you'd think to visit.

Fast facts about Chile

Where is it? Chile is located on the south-western coast of South America. It's a long, narrow country that is warm year-round in the north and cool in the south.

How do I get there? Direct flights to Santiago are available from Sydney and Melbourne, with connections to other cities in Chile available from there.

When should I go? Chile has the same seasonal pattern as Australia, with the hottest time being from December to February. March and April tend to be the driest months and the most pleasant time temperature-wise to visit the desert areas.

What should I do? Taste wine at some of South America's best vineyards, wander the colourful streets of Valparaiso, head to the hills and see the majestic Andes, explore the arid Atacama Desert and get up close and personal with fluffy llamas.
