Chia is a cryptocurrency that aims to be a green, eco-friendly alternative to Bitcoin. It was created by Bram Cohen, who invented the file-sharing platform BitTorrent and was launched in May 2021. According to Chia's website, it offers a more accessible way for individuals to mine or “farm” Chia than Bitcoin because anyone with extra space on their mobile phone, laptop or corporate network can farm Chia. On the other hand, mining Bitcoin requires access to electricity at wholesale prices, which is not accessible to individuals. In China, for example, users can use Amazon Web Service to mine Chia coins in just five minutes. Chia is designed to be a payment instrument rather than an investment opportunity. It is envisaged that you can pay for a coffee in England using your app from Thailand in Chia. Chia says anyone can build a new wallet to transact Chia without Chia’s permission or assistance.
