Celo is an open-source global payment platform that focuses on mobile phone users. According to Celo, the project wants to connect people globally and bring financial stability to those that need it the most. For transactions, Celo allows phone numbers and email addresses to be used as public keys, which lowers the barrier for entry to cryptocurrencies. User-friendly mobile applications are powered by the more complex Celo blockchain and smart contracts.
The more well-known Ethereum blockchain formed the basis for Celo, but the project has now progressed and the underlying infrastructure has been altered. The CELO token is the blockchain’s native unit of currency. It can be used for the governance of the platform and is staked in the blockchain's Proof-of-Stake mechanism to earn rewards and used as collateral against the Celo stablecoin cUSD.
