Car Insurance Companies

Not sure which car insurance company is right for you?

Comparing the car insurance options available to you is something that you should ideally do once a year when it's time to renew your policy. It’s important to regularly compare car insurance policies simply because things change over time. Your insurer may have lowered its rates or another insurer you looked at may now be offering a discount. If you don’t look at what’s out there, you’ll never know.
Your circumstances could also have changed. You may have gotten married, retired, got out of that dreaded under 26 age bracket, or have a new young driver in the family – all of these circumstances affect the cost of your car insurance.
With that in mind, this guide provides a snapshot of a number of different car insurance providers, to provide you with a cursory understanding of what each one of these car insurance companies offer.

Car insurance tips

There are many ways you can lower your premiums, regardless of which insurer you go with. These include:

  • How does my car affect the cost of my insurance? Your car affects the cost of insurance in various. Choosing a car with less horsepower or one less likely to be stolen will reduce the amount you'll have to pay for car insurance.
  • What happens if I nominate drives? Selecting the nominated drivers option can reduce your insurance premiums as you are saying to your insurer, 'These are the people that can drive my car.'
  • How does excess affect my premium? Increase your excess to lower your premium.
  • I don't drive much, can this help me pay less? Yes, some insurers allow you to select the a low kilometres option.
  • I have an alarm, does that help? Yes, adding security to your vehicle can help you to get a security discount.
  • I already have existing cover with this insurer, is there a discount? Sometimes, many insurers provide a loyalty discount if you have more than one type of insurance with the company.
  • I've had the same insurer for a while and never made a claim, where is my benefit? You may already have a No Claims Bonus discount in place. If you don't, it's time to start looking for another provider.
  • What is the difference between agreed and market value? If you are purely trying to reduce your premiums, insure for market rather than agreed value. However, agreed generally pays out a higher benefit as it is what the car was worth when you bought it, not what the car is currently worth.
  • Does gender affect the cost of insurance? Yes, men pay more in general for car insurance then women. So, if you are a couple, take your insurance out in the female’s name, with the male as a nominated driver.
  • Can I save by buying car insurance online? Yes, most insurers offer discounts if you buy your car insurance online.

What to look for in a company

Not all car insurance companies are the same and as well as researching their policies, you should also do some research on the insurer themselves to make sure that if you do make a claim, they will be there to pay it. Things to look for when researching car insurance companies include:

  • What is the companies reputation and financial? Insurers are ranked according to their industry standing and claims record by international ratings agency, Standard & Poor’s.
  • What is the car insurers customer satisfaction levels? Talking friends and family who have had dealings with them can give you an indication of how the insurer treats its customers. Social media can also give you an idea of their reputation.
  • What is the companies transparency like? The companies willingness to provide hard copies of contracts and terms can indicate their level of trustworthiness.
  • How does the company handle claims? Make sure you find an insurer that will walk you through its claims process. Check online for customer reviews, you will find a wealth of information about how happy people have been with their claims and also how they were treated.

How are car insurers regulated?

Car insurance companies are regulated by The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA), which also oversees banks, credit unions, building societies, friendly societies and most superannuation funds. APRA supervises institutions holding around $4.9 trillion in assets for depositors, policyholders and super fund members.

APRA is funded primarily by the financial services industry and its self-proclaimed mission is to establish and enforce prudential standards and practices designed to ensure that financial promises made by institutions are met.

I'm not satisfied with my claim, what can I do?

If you make a claim and you are unhappy with the way it is handled, all car insurance companies have a dispute resolution process.

  1. The first step is to talk to the insurer about your concerns.
  2. If your claims consultant and their supervisor are unable to resolve the matter to your satisfaction, the next step is an internal review. The claims manager will refer the matter to the insurer’s Internal Dispute Resolution team, who will review your case.
  3. If you are not happy with their decision, you are then entitled to seek an external review. This may be conducted by independent reviewers under the external dispute resolution scheme administered by the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS). Your insurer will advise you of who to contact in this case.
