4 popular driving routes in Hobart

Hobart to Port Arthur

  • How long is the drive? 200km, round trip
  • How long do I need? One day
  • Must-sees along the way: Tasman Arch, Devil's Kitchen

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and possibly the most popular daytrip out of Hobart for first timers is the convict penal settlement of Port Arthur.

Once you're out of the city wind through the countryside and Tasman National Park to this historic site, but don't forgo a side-trip to spy the coast's natural formations. This includes the Tasman Arch (pictured), Devil's Kitchen, the Tessellated Pavement, Remarkable Cave and Waterfall Bay.

Hobart to Bruny Island

  • How long is the drive? 167km, round trip
  • How long do I need? One day
  • Must-sees on Bruny Island: Adventure Bay, Bruny Island Bligh Museum, Cloudy Bay Lagoon, Bruny Island Lighthouse and Cockle Creek.

When the sun's out and adventure is on the cards, the ultimate day trip is to Bruny Island. It's a 40 minute drive from Hobart CBD and involves catching a ferry from Kettering. The good news is that it's a vehicle ferry so you can drive straight on and straight off when you arrive on the island. Highpoints include The Neck at Adventure Bay which affords breathtaking views of Hobart and Mount Wellington, the historic Bruny Island Lighthouse and stacks of places to eat and drink.

Great Eastern Drive (Buckland to Bay of Fires)

  • How long is the drive? 418km, one-way
  • How long do I need? Three to five days
  • Must-sees along the way: The Surf Coast, Freycinet Peninsula, Fertile Valleys and Maria Island

This is arguably the road trip across Tasmania that gets paid the most lip-service. It's coloured with beach upon beach and features well-known hotspots like Maria Island and Wineglass Bay in the Freycinet Peninsula.

It officially starts in Orford which is an hour out of Hobart and ends in St Helens which is about two hours from Launceston. However, you can extend the journey to start in Buckland and end at the Bay of Fires.

The Heritage Highway

  • How long is the drive? 268 km, round trip
  • How long do I need? Two days
  • Must-sees along the way: Pontville, Bothwell, Callington Mill, Blackman's River Bridge, Elizabeth River and Brickendon.

A less renowned though no less magical road trip is the Heritage Highway. It's a blast from the past that takes you by farmland, Georgian villages and historical properties where you can gaze upon immaculate gardens and wander through servants' quarters.

The highway features some of Australia's oldest constructs, including the Callington Mill, which is Australia's third oldest windmill, built in 1837 and Ratho, the nation's oldest golf course which winds the clock back to the 1820s.

Tips for driving in Hobart

  • Don't cross double white dividing lines. When a road has a set of double white lines running down the middle, it means you're not allowed to cross, even to turn into a driveway or a street on the opposite side of the road.
  • Look out for vehicles overtaking on the left. On multi-lane roads, it's legal for cars to overtake using the left lane as well as the right, so pay attention to your blind spots.
  • Keep your fuel topped up. It's not unusual for petrol stations in certain parts of Tasmania to close early or be shut when they're meant to be open. To make sure you don't run out of petrol, try to keep half a tank in your car at all times.
  • Drive on the left. As with the rest of Australia, Tasmanians drive on the left-hand side of the road.

Tips for car hire in Hobart

  • Car rental excess insurance. While car rentals generally come with basic insurance the excess is usually quite high. You can pay to have this reduced or you can opt for private insurance which may work out to be cheaper and you can customise to better suit your needs. Compare your options here.
