A rare price drop on flights to Vancouver and Montreal.

It’s a rare sight to see flights to Canada drop under $1,000, but when it happens it certainly makes us stop and pay attention.

You can now fly from Melbourne to Vancouver for just $820 return with XiamenAir, part of the Skyteam Alliance, on select travel dates in May.

Other notable fares with Air China include Sydney to Vancouver for $920 return in May, Sydney to Montreal for $936 in April and Melbourne to Montreal for $921 for select dates in September and October.

These sale fares do include stopovers in China, and if your flight includes a long enough break, Australians can take advantage of the free 72-hour transit visa where you can stretch your legs and get a glimpse of the stopover before continuing onto Canada.

How good are these fares?

At best, we've seen flights to Vancouver drop to $795 return. While these fares might not be as cheap, they are certainly cheaper than the usual sale fares, which are rarely under $900.

May temperatures are mild in Vancouver and you’ll find smaller crowds as locals are in school and summer holidays have yet to begin. These are also great dates for whale watching off Vancouver Island where you’re likely to spot killer whales.

In Montreal, you’ll find cooler weather in April with tops of 11°C and the warmer dates in September and October have an average high of 19°C. Traveling in these shoulder months should reward you with some cheaper accommodation prices.
