Buying a washing machine isn't something we do very often. So, when the time comes, it can be tricky to know what features to look for or which machine is the right one.

Making the wrong decision might not seem like a big deal, but many Aussie households use their washing machine daily. Your decision could literally make your life easier every day for years to come, so it's worth taking the time to get the decision right.

So what should you be looking for? Well, if you're in the market for a new washing machine, these are the 6 areas we think you should pay close attention to.

Technology and AI

Welcome to the future. Yep, even washing machines come with AI capabilities these days and they can make your life a whole lot easier.

Depending on the model you buy, AI capabilities could help you wash clothes quicker, more efficiently and more effectively, with less water and detergent waste.

For example, Samsung's Smart AI washing machine range can sense the weight of a load and how dirty the clothes are. Some models can even dispense the appropriate amount of water and detergent for that specific load – automatically1.

Dryers in the range are similarly high-tech with sensors that monitor the drying cycle and adjust the drying time to prevent overheating or damage to clothes. Fancy.

Do you find yourself over-stuffing your washing machine or running it more often than you'd like? If so, it might be time to upgrade to a larger machine.

While it can be tempting to opt for a smaller model (they'll be cheaper than their larger counterparts), it can actually be a false economy. Upgrade to a bigger size and you're likely to run your washing machine less, which essentially cuts down on chores. Who doesn't want that?

Remember, washing machines are sized according to the weight of dry clothes that can be washed in one load so it's an easy enough test to do at home.

Will this purchase make my life easier? It's a question you should always ask yourself when buying a new appliance – at the end of the day, that's its job.

Instead of getting overwhelmed by confusing features you might never use, look for ones that will have a tangible impact on your day-to-day life.

For example, Samsung has introduced a feature (AddWash) to some of its front-loading washing machines that allows for extra items to be added mid-wash2.

How many times have you set a load away only to realise you've left something you really need slung over the back of a chair or in a bag?

Speed and efficiency

You also want to make sure there are plenty of different cycle speeds and washing efficiencies, so you can match the style of wash to whatever garments will be in there.

Look for ultra-quick washes for when you need an emergency clean, deeper clean settings for those tougher items, and everything in between! For example, Samsung's Smart AI range has a 39 minute speed cycle, through to a hygienic steam cycle, and more tailored washes for specific items, such as athletic wear.

Energy efficiency

An energy-efficient machine is kind on the planet but it's also kind on your pocket. While you might pay slightly more for the upfront cost of the machine, it can pay off in the long run with more affordable energy bills.

According to the government's Energy Rating Calculator, it would cost around $122 a year to run a 7kg washing machine with a 3-star rating – that's if you're doing one warm load a day.

However, upgrade to a 4-star machine and your costs could drop to $89, while annual running costs for a 5-star machine were estimated at $65.

It might not seem like much, but over the course of its lifetime, the price difference can easily run into hundreds of dollars.

Washing machines have gone through a bit of a design revolution in recent years and there are some surprisingly sleek models on the market.

From sleek black models to minimalist panels and LED displays, there are countless innovations that are so far removed from the ugly white monstrosities we grew up with that they're almost unrecognisable. (But that's a good thing).

Now, it's possible to elevate your laundry appliances and align them with the aesthetic of the rest of your home. It's about time.
