What is Y-DNA testing?

Y-chromosome DNA tests take an in-depth look at the genetic makeup passed down by your father. As the Y-chromosome is only passed down to genetic males, this type of testing can only be applied to male test subjects. Females can get around this fairly easily though by asking a closely related male, such as their father or brother, to take the test instead.

Y-DNA tests trace your father-line ancestry using the DNA in your Y chromosome. This can tell you a lot about your paternal lineage. However, as it only traces your direct ancestry lines, it will only include about 1% of your family tree.

How far back do ancestry Y-DNA tests go?

Y-DNA traces a direct line of paternal ancestors and has the potential to reach back as far as 60,000–100,000 years. The catch? Only males can be tested using this method.
